Subiaco Continue Winning Ways to Start 2019 Season

Sunday, April 7, 2019 - 8:23 AM

Subiaco made the ideal start to their 2019 WAFL season, recording a convincing 79 point win over co-tenant rivals East Perth.

An electric start from Subiaco saw them slot through nine opening quarter goals building a 37 point lead, then extending the margin at every break rounding out round one with a big win over East Perth for the second season in succession.

After an entertaining and enterprising first quarter, East Perth were able to tighten the game up, as Subiaco battled to get their running and attacking game going.

After an even second and third quarters, Subiaco finished the game the stronger kicking the last seven goals of the game, including the last three by key forward Ben Sokol who finished with a team high five.

Veteran Kyal Horsley led the way for Subiaco with 36 possessions, with wingman Greg Clark having 29 possessions and also adding two goals.

Alongside Clark, Rhys Waters, Ryan Borchet, Ben Newton and Rowen Powell also each kicked two goals.

After a strong first up win, Subiaco turn their attention to East Fremantle as they travel to East Fremantle Oval on Saturday.

GAME CHANGERS

FIRST UP WIN FOR THE NEW GUYS

Subiaco debuted two new players a new captain and a new coach in Saturday’s win over East Perth. Jack Beverley and Harry Marsh debuted on field, with Beverley showing his typical toughness up forward, while Marsh added some silk to the back half, also getting forward to kick a goal. For the new captain, Leigh Kitchin had a presence around the contest having 25 possessions while for Beau Wardman, after a successful stint with the Subiaco Colts, the winning ways continued for Round One with the Subiaco seniors.

FAST STARTING LIONS

Subiaco’s first quarter of 2019 continued in much the same way that 2018 had transpired. Midfielder Ben Newton kicked a goal in the games opening minute and from there, Subiaco added another eight. Impressively, those nine goals came from nine individual goal kickers as Subiaco shared the goals around.

DOING IT TOUGH

Midfielder Craig Hoskins had his typical presence around the contest, finishing the game with a team high eight tackles. In a game where only 96 tackles were recorded, Hoskins was one of Subiaco’s most important around the contest, as was Ben Newton who had six tackles with Leigh Kitchin and Ben Sokol having five tackles a piece.

CONVERTING CHANCES

Another hallmark of Subiaco’s 2018 side was their ability to convert attacking fifty chances. In Saturday’s game Subiaco again showed an ability to make the most of their inside 50 entries. The Lions had 28 scoring shots from 50 inside 50’s at a conversion rate of 56% and were accurate in front of goal finishing with a 68% conversion.

DOING IT A MAN DOWN

The season started with disappointment for Subiaco as popular veteran big man Clancy Wheeler went down with a lower leg injury. Wheeler was unable to finish the game meaning Subiaco were forced to run the majority of the match down a rotation. In the hot conditions it was far from ideal, but the Lions manfully battled the game out, finishing the game as strongly as they started.

RESERVES & COLTS RECAP

It was mixed results for Subiaco’s Reserves and Colts team in Round One, with the Reserves winning a Grand Final rematch against East Perth and the Colts being defeated earlier in the day.

The Reserves Grand Final rematch was hotly contested, with East Perth building a 19 point half time lead.

As was the case last year though, the Subiaco Reserves would not give in and produced a stunning second half fightback to flip the half time margin, kicking eight goals to three, eventually running out 19 point winners.

The game turned in the second half on the back of Subiaco midfielder Max Walters who collected 16 second half possessions and kicked two crucial third quarter goals.

Daniel Leach continued to be prolific in the midfield with 26 possessions, while young midfielder Liam Hickmott had 26 in his first WAFL Reserves match.

Up forward Christian Martin kicked four goals in an encouraging display from the young key forward.

After a tight first half, East Perth finished the game stronger as Subiaco battled for goals in the second half, in what was ultimately a low scoring affair.
