Tuesday, April 9, 2019 - 8:21 AM

Back for another season, this is “By The Numbers”, all the key numbers that sit behind Subiaco’s season game by game!

Subiaco were too strong for East Perth in Round One, opening the season with a commanding 79 point victory.

There were big days for Ben Sokol, Jordan Lockyer, Greg Clark, Drew Rohde and Leigh Kitchin and a bunch of other positive omens to start the season.

This is “By The Numbers”.

1

GOAL – It was the end of a nearly four year drought for Jordan Lockyer on Saturday as he found his way onto the goalkickers list for just the second time in a 79 game Subiaco career. Lockyer kicked the one goal on Saturday, his first for the Lions since May 16 of 2015, doubling his career tally with the Lions. For reference Jordan now just needs 388 goals to match his father’s tally, with Andrew having kicked 390 WAFL goals.

3

INTERCEPT MARKS – Dashing defender Drew Rohde led the Lions with three intercept marks on Saturday. Despite having more forward ball, Subiaco were still able to win the intercept mark battle with their opponents, Subiaco having 16 and East Perth having 10.

5

GOALS – Key forward and reigning Austin Robertson Medal winner Ben Sokol continued where he finished last year, bagging five goals like he did in the 2018 WAFL Grand Final to lead the Lions. Five has become a popular number with Sokol, who has kicked five goals in three of his past four Subiaco appearances dating back to August last year.

7

INSIDE 50s – Hard working midfielder Josh Deluca led the Lions with seven forward fifty entries in the game against East Perth. Continuing to be freed up in the middle Deluca was an important part of the Subiaco midfield group around the stoppages and linking up the forward line.

8

CLEARANCES – New Subiaco captain Leigh Kitchin led the way with eight clearances for the Lions in Saturday’s win. It was a strong all round display from Kitchin who led from the front in the midfield throughout the big win.

9

FIRST QUARTER GOALKICKERS – In a remarkable opening quarter, Subiaco had nine individual goal kickers in the first stanza. Ben Newton started the procession in the games opening minute with Rhys Waters, Rowen Powell, Harry Marsh, Greg Clark, Ryan Borchet, Lachlan Delahunty, Ben Sokol and Craig Hoskins all finding the major opening in the games first 30 minutes.

11

WINNING STREAK – Subiaco has now won 11 straight games against their co-tenant rivals, with Saturday’s winning margin growing the average win in that span to more than 50 points per game. It was the third season in a row where the first meeting between Subiaco and East Perth produced a Lion winning margin in excess of 75 points. This is the highest active winning streak that Subiaco currently have going against an opponent.

29

DISPOSALS – Greg Clark smashed his career high disposal count in Saturday’s win, finishing with 29 touches on the day. His previous best was 24, recorded twice in 2018. It was also a career day in front of the big sticks for Clark, kicking two goals for the first time in his WAFL League career.

50

INSIDE 50’S – Subiaco hit the Inside 50 benchmark of 50 forward entries in Round One. On top of their 50 entries, they completed a 50/50/50 split by recording an inside 50 conversion rate of 56% and a goal accuracy conversion of 68%.

55

QUARTER TIME SCORE – Subiaco’s first quarter return of 9.1.55 made it the best start to a season ever for the Lions. It was the second year in a row that Subiaco has made a fast start against East Perth, having kicked 7.6.48 in Round One of 2018.

143

HANDBALLS – Subiaco had the second most handballs in Round One of 2019, recording 143, some 34 more than their opponents who had 109. Around the rest of the competition Peel had 169, Claremont had 141, South Fremantle 140 and Perth 139.
