Subiaco Makes It Consecutive Wins to Start 2019

Subiaco has continued its winning start to the 2019 WAFL season, recording a 45 point win over East Fremantle at East Fremantle Oval on Saturday.

 

A strong defensive effort was the backbone of the Subiaco win, as for the second consecutive week the Lions defence held their opponents to under 50 points with East Fremantle only able to register 10 scoring shots on the day.

 

At the other end, while a little wasteful early, Subiaco produced a typically efficient performance inside 50.

 

Subiaco kicked the only three goals of the opening quarter, holding East Fremantle scoreless and then kicked four goals to two in the last, with the bookend quarters producing Subiaco’s best form of the day.

 

Kyal Horsley led Subiaco with 29 disposals and two last quarter goals, with new captian Leigh Kitchin having 27 disposals.

 

Ryan Borchet kicked four goals in an encouraging display up forward with the dangerous Rhys Waters also adding three goals.

 

Subiaco has a short turnaround, with only a six day break into a blockbuster and historic clash with West Coast WAFL on Good Friday.

 

 

GAME CHANGERS

 

DOING IT TWO MEN DOWN

In Round One Subiaco were forced to overcome a loss in rotation after Clancy Wheeler went down in the games opening minutes. It got worse in Round Two as defenders Drew Rohde and Harry Marsh were both forced from the game in the first half. Subiaco were forced to play out the second half down to just two rotations. Subiaco’s defence showed typical resilience to overcome the losses, holding East Fremantle to just five goals after half time despite missing two key pieces.

 

SCORELESS OPENING

It was a typically resolute Subiaco defence, with the first quarter highlighting a strong defensive stand. For just the sixth time in history, Subiaco was able to hold East Fremantle scoreless in the opening quarter. Not since Round 20 of 1960 had Subiaco been able to achieve that feat.

 

ANOTHER DEBUT

Travis Cleggett became the third Subiaco player to debut at league level in 2019, as the Collie product became the 1642^nd player to represent the Lions. Cleggett showed his typical hard running and spirit throughout the game, finishing with 11 disposals and four tackles in an encouraging first up display.

 

APPLYING PRESSURE

Subiaco’s intent was on display throughout with the Lions winning the tackle count by 10, while also winning the disposal battle by 96. Subiaco finished with 71 tackles with Greg Clark and Kyal Horsley each laying nine tackles to lead the way.

 

DELA DOMINATES AGAIN

Versatile big man Lachlan Delahunty continued to shine against East Fremantle. For the third straight game against the Sharks, Delahunty collected at least 25 disposals, finishing Saturday’s game with a strong all-round effort of 26 disposals, 15 hit-outs and eight marks.

IN OTHER GAMES

It was mixed results for Subiaco’s Reserves and Colts across both men’s and women’s games, with two wins and two losses against East Fremantle.

 

In the Reserves, for the second straight week Subiaco was forced to produce a second half comeback, kicking the final three goals to pip East Fremantle by four points.

 

Trailing by 13 points early in the last quarter, it was Tom Breeze first and then Shannon Nelson, who kicked the last two goals of the game that contributed to what had appeared an unlikely victory.

 

Nelson’s final goal to give Subiaco the lead came with less than five minutes to go, giving Subiaco its first lead since early in the third quarter.

 

Subiaco’s defence then held firm in the tense closing stages.

 

Daniel Leach led the way for Subiaco with 30 disposals and a goal while Kaidyn Fullgrabe was outstanding in the second half, finishing with 28 disposals and 12 marks.

 

Joel Latham produced his best game of the year with 26 disposals and 10 marks as he continues to work his way back from a knee injury suffered in 2017.

 

Aaron Heal on his return from injury got through the match unscathed, finishing with 20 disposals and seven marks in his first game of 2019.

 

With Subiaco taking on West Coast WAFL next week, the Reserves have a weekend off, before taking on Peel on Saturday April 27 at Leederville Oval.

The Subiaco Colts slumped to their second straight loss to start 2019 after being beaten by 57 points by East Fremantle.

 

Subiaco were held scoreless in the opening quarter as East Fremantle jumped out to a 27 point lead and were from there despite continuing to work hard and fight the game out, were unable to get themselves back into the contest.

 

In positive signs, Subiaco did outscore their opponents in both the second and last quarters, however were left to rue the first and third quarters as they conceded 10 goals to nil.

 

Once again Tristan Hobley led the way for the Subiaco side, collecting an equal game high 29 disposals and laying eight tackles.

 

Colts Premiership teammates Ben Golding and Nick Martin also supported Hobley, with Golding having 25 disposals and eight tackles while Martin had 24 disposals and took seven marks.

 

Noah Ash, Trey Kennedy and Brandan Young each kicked a goal for Subiaco.

The Subiaco Women’s seasons started for both Reserves and Rogers Cup on Sunday at Richard Guelfi Reserve in Stirling.

 

In promising signs for the Subiaco Women’s teams, the Rogers Cup Youth Girls started their season with a memorable 14 point win over East Fremantle.

 

Subiaco held a seven point half time lead and doubled the lead again in the second half, winning a hard fought battle in a match that left promising signs about the Youth Girls season to come.

 

Kia Buckley was a force up forward kicking four goals for Subiaco while Abbey Dowrick also kicked two goals.

Meanwhile for the Reserves, they suffered a disappointing 46 point loss against a strong East Fremantle outfit.

 

East Fremantle kicked the only two goals of the first quarter and built a 25 point half time lead, continuing on after half time against a determined Subiaco side.
