The Winners - Round 2

Tuesday, April 16, 2019 - 7:18 AM

Subiaco made it a second straight win to start the season, defeating East Fremantle in a game of attrition last Saturday.

These were the winners of another successful day for Subiaco:

LEIGH KITCHIN

The new captain of Subiaco continues to be the model of consistency. For the second straight week to the start the year, Kitchin had over 25 disposals, finishing with 27 including a game high 11 clearances. Kitchin has now recorded at least 20 dispoals in 20 straight games dating back to Round 3 of 2018.

MAKESHIFT DEFENCES

Subiaco was dealt a double blow during the first half with both Drew Rohde and Harry Marsh suffering match ending injuries before half time. It forced the Subiaco coaches box to shuffle the magnet boards to cover two key pieces of the Subiaco defence. The makeshift group held up strongly conceding just 10 scoring shots from 27 inside 50s.

TIM SUTHERLAND

The young Subiaco ruckman produced a promising performance up forward and in the ruck in Saturday’s game. Sutherland contributed around the clearances, finishing with five and up forward had three score assists, also kicking a goal himself.

FORWARD HALF TURNOVERS

The pressure of Subiaco’s forwards provided direct reward in Saturday’s game, as Subiaco generated 27 points from forward 50 turnovers. As usual Rhys Waters set the standard with three goals while Ryan Borchet led the way in front of goals with four.

JOEL LATHAM

The popular Latham produced his best performance since returning from a long term knee injury at an ideal time for Subiaco. With a banged up Subiaco defence, Latham comes into calculations for a league recall after a game in which he had 26 disposals and 10 marks. Latham and fellow Premiership Defender Aaron Heal both got through games at Reserves level on Saturday in a promising sign as Subiaco’s injury toll begins to mount.

COMEBACKS

For the second straight week, Subiaco had to overcome a half time deficit in the Reserves to record a gutsy come from behind win. Subiaco Reserves left their run late, however kicked the final three goals of the game to sneak home by four points. Prime movers Daniel Leach, Kaidyn Fullgrabe and Braden Fimmano all had big second halves to help inspire the win.

SHANNON NELSON

While Nelson only had 10 disposals for the day, he arguably had the two biggest moments, as two clutch goals in the dying stages were pivotal to the win. Nelson’s two goals found him at the end of strong link up play by the Lions, however it was the clinical finishing of Nelson which was most impressive in those last two goals.
