Subiaco Overpower Peel in One Sided Round Four Win

Subiaco has continued its winning start to the 2019 WAFL Season, overpowering Peel with one of its best performances of the season at Leederville Oval yesterday.

 

Subiaco kicked seven goals to one in the first quarter to build a 37 point quarter time lead before extending the lead at every change eventually running out 62 point winners.

 

As they have done all season, Subiaco made a bright start, with seven different players hitting the goal scorers sheet as they kick six unanswered goals in 15 minutes to end the first quarter.

 

From there Subiaco was able to coast towards a fourth straight win outscoring the Thunder in every quarter including five goals to three to finish the game in the last.

 

Kyal Horsley led Subiaco with 29 disposals with Lachlan Delahunty and Hayden Kennedy each having 28 disposals.

 

Josh Deluca had 27 dispsoals and Max Walters had 24 disposals with Deluca leading the side with five tackles and Walters with eight inside 50 entries.

 

Up forward pressure forwards Tom Edwards-Baldwin and Rhys Waters each kicked three goals.

 

Subiaco travels to Bassendean next week, set to take on Swan Districts in WAFL Round Five action on Saturday.

 

 

GAME CHANGERS

 

FAST STARTERS

Subiaco’s ability to start strongly was seen again against Peel with a seven goal opening quarter and 37 point quarter time lead. So far in 2019 Subiaco has outscored teams by 107 points in the first quarter, having an average quarter time lead of just under 27 points.

 

HORSE AGAIN

With only a few minutes left in the match it appeared that someone other than Kyal Horsley would top Subiaco’s disposal count. However Horsley was the Lion who finished the game as the strongest, having a handful of late last quarter possessions, finishing with 29 to once again top the Lions disposal count.

 

CLARK ON THE SCOREBOARD IN GAME 50

Young Subiaco midfielder Greg Clark played his 50^th league match on Saturday and kicked two goals to celebrate. After kicking just three goals in his 46 games heading into this year, Clark has now kicked multiple goals in two games to show a new threat inside 50 for Subiaco.

 

CONSISTENT TEAM EFFORT

Subiaco had 21 of their 22 players reach double digits in disposals highlighting a strong all round effort from the Lions side. Subiaco comfortably won the possession count having 425 disposals to 309. They had 261 kicks to 199 and 164 handballs to 110. They also had 133 marks to 79 completely dominating the ball around the ground.

 

BATTLE IN THE RUCK

While the ruck duo of Tim Sutherland and Lachlan Delahunty was well beaten by the powerful Peel ruck division in terms of hitouts, Subiaco’s two big men were able to both limit the impact of Peel’s big men around the contest and around the ground. Sutherland tied a career high with 13 disposals and had a career high five marks. Delahunty was his typical damaging self around the ground finishing with 28 disposals. Each also added a goal, showing their impact when up forward.

 

BIRTHDAY BOY

Hayden Kennedy celebrated his 24^th birthday with a typically consistent performance down back for the Lions. Kennedy had 28 disposals and seven marks, time and again providing much needed drive from behind while also consistently winning one on one battles. Kennedy continues to be one of the most underrated players of the Subiaco side.

 

MEDICAL ROOM

The win was slightly soured by injuries to Ryan Borchet and Braden Fimmano. Borchet collided with a point post in the first quarter but manfully battled the match out, while Fimmano left the field with an upper body injury in the third quarter and did not return.

RESERVES RECAP

 

Subiaco’s Reserves returned after a week’s break maintaining their unbeaten run to start 2019, by defeating Peel by 17 points in a hard fought battle.

 

Subiaco made their key run during the second quarter where they kicked three goals to one, building an 18 point half time lead.

 

While Peel threatened to challenge during the second half, Subiaco were able to maintain a steady three goal break throughout most of the half.

 

Once again Daniel Leach proved to be Subiaco’s prime midfield mover. Finishing with a game high 30 disposals.

 

Up forward a returning Ryan Vermeersch and young forward Jack Mayo each kicked three goals.

 

GAME CHANGERS

 

DOING IT TOUGH

While Tom Breeze and Liam Hickmott only had 27 disposals between them, they were at the front of a strong Subiaco tackling performance. Breeze and Hickmott each had 10 tackles helping Subiaco to a 75 to 68 advantage in the tackle count. Hickmott was renowned for his tackling at Colts level and has continued this ability in senior football.

 

MAYO LURKING

After being an emergency to make a league debut the past two weeks, young forward Jack Mayo continues to threaten for that debut match. Mayo was among Subiaco’s best having 20 disposals, taking six marks and kicking three goals.

 

RUCK TRIO

Subiaco bucked conventionaly wisdom by going into Saturday’s contest with three recognised ruckman. Andy Doyle, Josh Chapman and Mach Deng split time between the ruck and around the ground to give the Lions a different look. Up forward this different look worked with key forwards Jack Mayo and Ryan Vermeersch able to kick three goals each while both Doyle and Chapman added goals while working up forward.

COLTS RECAP

 

Subiaco’s Colts slumped to a third straight loss to start 2019, after being outplayed by Peel to the tune of 65 points in a special Friday afternoon battle.

 

After conceding six goals to one in the first quarter, Subiaco were never able to get back in the contest, despite showing strong fight through the middle two quarters.

 

Captain Jacob Peletier led the side with 29 disposals and 11 tackles with debutant Matthew Johnson having 19 disposals.

 

Small forwards Trey Kennedy and Ezekiel Bolton each kicked two goals to lead the way in front of goals.

 

Subiaco face another tough Colts challenge next week against an unbeaten Swan Districts side.

 

 

GAME CHANGERS

 

POSITIVE SIGNS

To an extent the 65 point winning margin does not justify the positive signs that Subiaco’s Colts showed for patches of the match. Across the second and third quarters, Subiaco matched Peel, 4.1 to 3.10. It shows that Subiaco’s best play can match the best teams in the competition, the battle is to provide the consistency across four quarters.

 

CAPTAIN COURAGEOUS

Captain Jacob Peletier did all he could to lift his side in Friday’s game. Peletier led the side in disposals, tackles and inside 50 entries. He had 10 more disposals than any other Subiaco Colt player and four more tackles than any other colt player. Peletier has been one of the shining lights through the first three games for the colts in leading by example.

 

DEBUTANTS GALORE

Subiaco blooded six new playes in Friday’s game. Jed Kemp, Matthew Johnson, Connor Faraone, Mark Corbett, Kane Foley and Zac Caufield all debuted for the club, showing promising signs throughout the match.
