Subiaco made it five wins from five starts in 2019, overcoming a 22 point deficit to beat Swans by 18 points in one of their most fierce battles of the year so far.

While Subiaco’s lengthy winning streak continued, Swans were able to push the Lions to the very extreme across the past two seasons.

In the end, it was left to Subiaco’s midfield workers, miserly defence and hard pressuring forward line that helped see the winning run continue.

POINTS – After conceding their worst quarter of the season during the third quarter, where Swans kicked five goals, Subiaco bounced back with their best last quarter of the season. Swans could only muster two points against a stingy Subiaco defence as the midfield gained ascendancy and the defence held firm against any forward opportunities. Subiaco has held a team to a goalless quarter in four of their five matches so far in 2019.

TACKLES – Though Rhys Waters had his first goalless game of the year, he was still one of Subiaco’s best forwards by weight of forward pressure. Waters laid a team high eight tackles in the game, with a number of crucial ones late in the game to help give Subiaco repeat forward entries.

CLEARANCES – Max Walters impact around the contest continues to grow, as the young midfielder picked up a game high nine clearances in Saturday’s win. Walters has turned into one of Subiaco’s key clearance players alongside fellow young midfield star Josh Deluca.

HITOUTS – Lachlan Delahunty collected 17 hit-outs, the most he has had in a match this season, and the most he has had in nearly a year. You have to go back to Round 8 of 2018 for the last time Delahunty topped this figure, having 24 hit-outs in a win over Perth on that occasion.

MARGIN – At the 30 minute mark of the third quarter, Subiaco found themselves 22 points behind. Only once in the past two seasons has Subiaco trailed by that much, during the Second Semi Final of 2018 where they trailed by 23 points. What made this turnaround significant was the ability of Subiaco to turn that deficit into a lead within 10 minutes of game time. Rowen Powell kicked a goal on the three quarter time siren and when Jack Mayo goaled 10 minutes into the last, Subiaco had gone from four goals down, to in front.

DISPOSALS – After combining for just 23 disposals to three quarter time, Kyal Horsley and Leigh Kitchin were clutch in the final quarter. They more than doubled their first three quarter output in the last quarter alone, each collecting 12 disposals in the quarter.

WINNING STREAK – Subiaco’s active winning streak has grown to a quarter century. After losing the 2017 Grand Final, Subiaco were unbeaten through 20 games in 2018 and have now won five straight to start 2019. Another impressive streak that Subiaco has going, they have now won 42 straight home and away season matches. You have to go back to Round 1 of 2017 for the last Subiaco loss in a home and away match.

MARKS – Power forward Ben Sokol leads the WAFL with 43 marks in Subiaco’s five games so far in 2019. Sokol had 11 marks in Saturday’s win over Swans and was the one constant aerial threat inside the Subiaco forward half.
