The Winners - State Game & WAFLW Round 2

While Subiaco’s men’s teams took the weekend off, eight members of the senior squad were in action with the WA State team, with the Women’s teams also playing in their historic first home WAFLW match.

As with all weeks there was a few standout performances from Subiaco’s players.

This is “The Winners” for last weekend.

JOSH DELUCA

Deluca was a deserving winner of the Simpson Medal as the best Western Australian player in the state game between the WAFL and SANFL. Deluca produced a typical standout performance in the midfield and forward of centre, collecting 29 disposals, laying seven tackles and kicking a goal. Since his return to Subiaco at the commencement of the 2018 season, Deluca has become one of the WAFL’s premier midfielders and players. Sunday represented a chance for Deluca to prove his standing amongst WAFL footballers. By matches end, he had no peer. He was rightfully adjudged best.

STATE GAME DEBUTANTS

While Deluca’s debut state game won him the Simpson medal, Subiaco’s other two debutants also had standout performances. Power forward Ben Sokol grasped his chance to be the most dangerous forward in the game. Finishing with 11 marks and kicking four goals, three behinds, this game highlighted the stregnths of Sokol’s game best to a wider audience. Meanwhile tough dashing defender Hayden Kennedy also had a strong performance, finishing with 17 disposals and showing his typical hardness and fight for the contest.

KYAL HORSLEY

The WA skipper did all he could to lift his side finishing with a game high 32 disposals. Horsley was a consistent battler through the WA midfield, topping the disposal count and also having a team high eight forward 50 entries. Topping his game with two goals, Horsley showed typical leadership and fight in the WA loss.

CLEAN SWEEPS

While the Subiaco men’s team had the weekend off, the Subiaco Women did the club proud by completing their second clean sweep of the season and second in successive weeks. Playing in their first WAFLW home match, the Women’s team produced a big second quarter and then held firm in a tense final quarter to win a hard fought Grand Final replay. Earlier in the day, the Reserves and Rogers Cup teams had big wins over East Perth.

ABBEY DOWRICK

The 16 year old Dowrick produced a WAFLW debut to remember on Sunday. A product of Subiaco’s regional district from Kambalda, Dowrick starred up forward for Subiaco kicking a game high three goals. Already highly regarded, the debut of Dowrick has firmly put her in the sights of higher honours.
