Subiaco’s long winning streaks came to an end, as the Lions suffered a surprise home loss to South Fremantle last weekend.

After finding ways to win close counters throughout the past month, Subiaco could not overcome a determined South Fremantle.

These are some of the numbers behind Subiaco’s first loss in over 18 months.

LOSS – For a host of Subiaco’s newest players, Saturday represented their first loss as Subiaco league players. Jacob Miller had played in 22 wins before this first loss, while Ryan Borchet had played in 14 wins before the loss. McKenzie Lawrence, Jack Mayo and Harry Marsh were the other Lions who suffered their first WAFL league loss on Saturday.

MARKS – Indicating where the ball spent most of the game, Subiaco’s dual leading mark takers on the day were defenders Aaron Heal and Jordan Lockyer. Heal was dominant down back taking six intercept marks as part of his 10.

CLEARANCES – Captain Leigh Kitchin did everything could on the inside to help try and lead his team. The Subiaco inside mid had a season high 11 clearances, working to both Subiaco and South Fremantle ruck taps. Kitchin also had an equal season high 27 disposals.

WIN STREAK – Subiaco saw a 25 game winning run come to an end. This was the second best win streak in the over 130 year history of the WAFL competition, trailing only the Australian record 35 game winning run of East Fremantle. Prior to this run, Subiaco’s best achievement were dual 19 game win streaks across 2005 and 2006 as well as 2016 and 2017.

INSIDE 50s – Subiaco posted its lowest inside 50 count in nearly two years, recording just 37 inside 50 entries. You have to go back to Round 15 and a water logged Joondalup Arena when Subiaco had just 36 inside 50’s for the last time that Subiaco failed to crack 40 forward fifty entries. Interestingly South Fremantle have held Subiaco to three of its five lowest inside 50 counts over the past two seasons.

DAYS – Subiaco suffered its first loss since the 2017 WAFL Grand Final. This marked an incredible 601 day run without suffering a loss. Two other long standing streaks ended with the loss, Subiaco had gone 791 days without a home and away loss and 1092 days since a home and away loss at Leederville Oval. As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end!
