Subiaco Seek to Rebound Against Claremont
After suffering their first loss since the 2017 Grand Final last weekend Subiaco will aim to get back on the winning side when they take on Claremont this Saturday in a Round 7 clash at Claremont Oval with league bouncedown at 2.15pm.
Subiaco and Claremont have both had promising starts to the 2019 season, although both have had surprises losses in recent weeks.
Coach Beau Wardman will make at least four changes with Josh Deluca out with injury and Joel Latham, Jack Mayo and Jacob Miller all going out of the side.
After missing last week as a late out, Ben Newton comes back into the side, joined by Jack Beverley, Michael Braut, Travis Cleggett, Daniel Leach, Drew Rohde and Clancy Wheeler.
After strong performances in the Reserves last week, Subiaco are likely to be bolstered by the return of Wheeler as another tall option and the rebound of dashing half back Rohde.
Subiaco remain in top spot heading into the clash, while Claremont go in sitting fourth on the WAFL ladder.
Keep an eye on Subiaco’s social media channels for updates across the day and if you cannot make it to the game, KIX Digital will have a live call.
GAME CHANGERS
GETTING BACK ON TRACK
After last week’s loss at home to South Fremantle, losing their winning streak in over 18 months Subiaco will head into this week’s match looking to get back on track. After their strong form throughout the past years, Subi will look to both maintain their form and also improve in the areas that let them down last week as the take on Claremont who have also shown strong form to start the season. Subiaco will be hungry to get another win.
DEFENSIVE BATTLE
Subiaco and Claremont have been outstanding defensively so far in 2019. A year after putting up historically great defensive numbers, Subiaco are producing at a similar defensive level again in 2019. Meanwhile Claremont have gone one better than Subiaco, holding teams to under 50 points per game so far in 2019. Whichever team can make the most of their attacking opportunities will go a long way to winning what will likely be a defensive battle.
THAT ONE LAST YEAR
Before Subiaco’s streak came to an end last week, Claremont had gotten the closest to ending the long winning run of the Lions. Subiaco was forced to come from behind, holding on for a tight three point win in Round 17 last year at Claremont Oval. With two of the premier midfield groups in WAFL football, this again promises to be another entertaining WAFL battle.
CLAREMONT WIN STREAK
Subiaco has beaten Claremont in the last eight matches between the two sides dating back to late in the 2014 season. While Claremont has been renowned as an outstanding defensive side over the past five years, the Lions have been the one side to continually break down the Claremont defensive group, having passed 90 points in seven of those eight wins.
OTHER GRADES
It is a big weekend of football at Claremont. On Saturday morning, the girls will get the day underway with a 9.25am start and the first WAFLW battle between Claremont and Subiaco. Following the WAFLW fixture, the top placed Claremont Reserves will host the third placed Subiaco Reserves in what should be an intense battle and replay of last year’s WAFL Reserves Preliminary Final. Than on Sunday, the Subiaco Colts and Futures will play against Claremont, with both sides looking to maintain winning form.
