2019 OPTUS WAFL PREMIERSHIP SEASON ROUND 9

SUBIACO v PERTH

SUBIACO 11.13 (79) defeated PERTH 1.4 (10)

The first game of round 9 was on a Saturday afternoon, with torrential rain and strong wins greeting both teams in a clash between first (7-1) and third (6-2) on the WAFL ladder. In what was the most anticipated WAFL game so far in the 2019 season with Perth winning their opening five matches and dreaming of a fairytale story to play finals football for the first time since 1997.

The chance for the Demons to make a statement of their credentials in 2019 didn’t quite eventuate with the Lions significantly handling the extreme conditions to win 11.13 (79) to 1.4 (10).

It proved a day to forget for Perth, with captain Corey Yeo losing the toss resulting in Subiaco gaining the early advantage, kicking with the strong wind before the rain began to tumble down.

Going with the breeze and in the relatively dry conditions, Subiaco got rolling in the first quarter to kick five goals to one from Perth. The Lions' lead of 26 points at quarter-time would then never be challenged.

Torrential rain made life challenging throughout the remaining three-quarters and was at its worst in the second quarter with Perth only able to manage two behinds kicking with the wind.

Despite the rain and wind making life challenging, Subiaco even managed a purple patch during the third quarter to end up kicking four more goals to head into three-quarter-time with a 56-point advantage.

Subiaco went on to win the game 11.13 (79) to 1.4 (10) to and remain top of the table. It was the Demons' lowest ever score at Leederville Oval in 154 visits.

Rhys Waters and Ryan Borchet both did well in the conditions to kick three goals each for Subiaco with Lachlan Delahunty a dominant force with 36 possessions, nine marks, 21 hit outs and two goals.

Captain Leigh Kitchin thrived in the conditions as well with 25 possessions while Greg Clark picked up 23 touches for the Lions, Kyal Horsley 20, Ben Newton 18, Max Walters 18, Daniel Leach 18, Hayden Kennedy 17 and Simon Moore 17.

Clancy Wheeler had 15 touches, seven tackles, 13 hit outs and two behinds in his 150th appearance for Subiaco.

2019 OPTUS WAFLW PREMIERSHIP SEASON ROUND 7

EAST FREMANTLE v SUBIACO

EAST FREMANTLE 1.4 (16) defeated by SUBIACO 5.6 (36)

East Fremantle and Subiaco played off in the Grand Final at league level in the final WA Women's Football League season last year and they met again for the second time in 2019 on Saturday 22 June at New Choice Homes Park with plenty on the line.

Subiaco confirmed itself as the team to beat in the Optus WAFLW Premiership Season for 2019 with a 20-point victory over East Fremantle.

It was slow going with the heavy rain in the first quarter and there was just the one goal scored which went the way of Subiaco with the Lions having the only four scoring shots to lead by nine points at quarter-time.

Subiaco then added two more goals in the second term to extend their lead by half-time to 16 points despite East Fremantle getting on the board with its only goal of the first half.

The Sharks then managed just the one behind in the third quarter with the Lions kicking a goal to open up a 21-point lead by three-quarter-time.

It was then a goal apiece in the final term with Subiaco running out 5.6 (36) to 2.4 (16) winners.

The win put Subiaco at 5-1, two games clear on top of the WAFLW ladder after seven rounds.

Renee Forth kicked two goals for Subiaco with Beatrice Devlyn, Hayley Miller and Tarnee Tester all adding one apiece.

Lara Filocamo, Miller, Kristen Jayasuriya, Claire Ortiepp and Leah Mascall were all about Subiaco's best performers in the win.
