From the Pilbara to Subiaco
Last week, Subiaco announced the signing of Pilbara pair Daniel Farmer and Lewis Upton, the pair playing in the same side since representing WA as part of the New Holland State Country Team mid-2019 at Optus Stadium.
Lewis is a mature-age player who has been playing with Dampier Sharks in recent years, under coach former Fremantle Docker Steven Dodd. Senior Coach Beau Wardman described Upton as a highly skilled midfield/forward with a good engine. “Lewis is strongly built and has a strong sporting background in football and cricket. Lewis’ maturity will ensure a successful transition into WAFL football” said Wardman
Wardman added “Lewis has already shown his ability to be clean with the ball and make good decisions. Working closely with some of our senior players and Jason Bristow, he could really be an influential addition for our senior squad.”
Daniel Farmer Jr related to former Fremantle and Melbourne forward Jeff “The Wizard” Farmer and former Subiaco Legend Allistair Pickett, is a mercurial forward with ability to find the goals. “His work ethic on and off the field is something that we recognised with his job at Woodside and his endurance at a high level. Daniel comes to Subiaco from Karratha Kats where he was averaging a couple of goals a game playing across half-forward” said Wardman.
Speaking of their recruitment, Wardman stated the Club is excited to give both Daniel and Lewis an opportunity at WAFL level and believes they will develop well in a professional environment. “The strength of the Club over a long period of time is to invest in the development of our players and challenge them to be better each day.”
“Both players have been great on the track in the first few sessions, showing a good level of fitness and skills to match. The boys have been embraced by our playing group and we look forward to watching their growth over pre-season and into season 2020 ” said Wardman.
