Ones to Watch
Star on-baller Lachlan Vanirsen has enjoyed a fantastic season, picking up a myriad of personal achievements along the way. The 17-year-old was selected in the State U/18’s squad last month and was awarded the Jack Clark Medal as the 2020 Colts Best & Fairest earlier this week. Vanirsen has performed strongly in both the finals he’s played this season and he will be desperate to add a Premiership medallion to his list of accolades. Vanirsen has been averaging 23 disposals, 5.8 marks and 4.6 tackles this season, so expect another strong showing against the Tigers this weekend.
Jed Kemp has been a model of consistency this season, gathering the ball at least 17 times in every game he’s played. He has performed strongly in his two matches against Claremont this season also, amassing 21 disposals and seven marks back in Round 1, following this up with a 19 disposal, 10 tackle effort in the first week of Finals. A similar output from the Goldfields product will go a long way to Subiaco winning the game.
Jaxon McGowan has proven to be a reliable performer all season, averaging 16 disposals, 3.9 marks and 2.3 tackles per game, rarely dipping below these numbers. His most impactful game of the season came against Claremont in round 1, where he gathered 24 disposals, took seven marks and laid three tackles in a performance that saw him named as one of the best on the ground. He will be full of confidence heading into this match and looking to provide a similar output for his team.
Sandon Page has been one of the best forwards in the competition this season; booting 22 goals from his nine games so far, with two bags of five amongst that tally. While Page has not registered a goal in his last fortnight of footy, he has still worked hard up the ground to find a way of impacting the game and to support his teammates. He always finds plenty of the ball for a key forward and is unstoppable in the air when at his best. The Claremont defenders will be wary of Page’s impact on the game and if he performs strongly, the Lions are a massive chance of winning this year’s flag.
After getting his season underway in Round 3 Jaxon Bilchuris has become a dominant force in the Subiaco forward line. Standing at 194cm and weighing in at 95kg, he is a dominant marking player, averaging nearly six per game while booting 20 goals from his eight games in the process. The Subiaco midfielders will be looking to target the Wanneroo product in as many one-on-one’s as possible, knowing the man-mountain cannot be beaten in a marking contest.
