Subiaco Colts Pre-Season Update
Much like the senior squad, the Colts team are well into pre-season as they look to defend their 2020 Premiership success, kicking off their campaign on Good Friday against East Perth.
Talking with Colts Head Coach, Chayce Creedy, he said that the team arrived back at training in good condition post the Christmas and New Years break.
“We have a young group learning what the physical requirements are like at this level. The majority of the group have made good progress, and as with all programs, I am sure there are a few that wish they had a done a bit more. Live and Learn”.
“With the late finish to last year we allowed the boys a little longer break but still have ample time to get the group up to standard” said Creedy.
James McKee has taken over the strength and conditioning program with the Colts, and has done an excellent job in pushing the boys along.
There are a few players in the rehab group at this stage, but a majority of players should reintegrate to training over the next few weeks and be available for early practice games.
The aim for 2021, is the same each year; as a development pathway the focus is giving players a chance to develop themselves as people and footballers.
“Obviously we had good success in a shortened 2020 season, but that is behind us and this group is at the start of their colts journey, so that aim would be to develop the high Subiaco standard and then if good enough win a few games” said Creedy.
Creedy said there are a few players whom the team are excited to see how they develop, with this level of football great, as players will pop up unexpectedly and perform strongly.
“Matthew Johnson has been training with seniors and from all reports going well, we hope not to see him in the colts but he is one to watch being in the state program.”
“Neil Erasmus who had a breakout game last year in the GF has started the year strongly on the track and we are excited to watch him develop.”
“Campbell Henderson has been in rehab after a small operation but is extremely fit and we think has a big year in store.”
With the recent outbreak of COVID-19 in Perth, the players are now only able to train outside for one hour per day with one other individual. Creedy said that previous experience tells us that you must use any breaks in training wisely. So depending on what eventuates will dictate what the team will do.
“If we are back to normal from Saturday we will just stay the course. If it turns out to be longer we will adjust to it being more about connection and trying to keep the group engaged.”
“We have to be careful to not overplay the importance of football ‘the game’ in comparison to a worldwide pandemic, but football ‘the team’ is important no matter the scenario” said Creedy.
Subiaco Football Club will look to advice members of updates with the COVID-19 situation once more information comes to hand.
