Subiaco Women's Season underway this weekend
The Subiaco Women’s Team kick off their 2021 campaign this weekend against South Fremantle on Sunday 21 February at Fremantle Community Bank Oval, with bouncedown at 1pm.
Speaking with new head coach Michael Farmer, he said the players have been outstanding in the pre-season with a fair amount of changes taking place that involved starting a lot earlier than previous year, and all have very professional in their approach to a new game plan and structure.
“We’ve welcomed Scott Stanton, Jenny Wallace and Luke Richardson into the coaching group who along with Pia Faletti, Lauren Stammers and Sarah Michell from last year have been amazing at keeping the girls locked in and continually raising our standards.”
“Our new Strength & Conditioning coach Beatrice Devlyn has put them through their paces extremely well; that’s seen a number of players cut big times off their time trials. With a bigger season this year, they are pretty keen for the season to start” said Farmer.
In 2021, the WAFLW competition has been pushed forward to be aligned with the AFLW season, with round 4 being played this weekend. The changes have meant that those AFLW players who also play for the Subiaco Women’s team are unable to play in the WAFLW competition, unless they are not selected to play at their respective AFLW club or when the AFLW season ends.
Danika Pisconeri and Lindal Rohde have also decided to take some time away from football this year which has is a big loss for the Subiaco Women’s Team.
“Our Rogers squad have around 30 players at the moment which is a great sign for the future of the club and have been training and integrating well with the seniors” said Farmer.
The Subiaco Women’s Team rehab group has been relatively small all pre-season, a great result with so many players on the track and training.
“Kia Buckley and Abbey Dowrick are currently working through some injuries but should be pushing to play in the early rounds of the season, while Lara Filocamo has progressed really well from her broken leg she sustained last year.”
Michael Famer says the club aims to do one better than last year and win a premiership, after being competitive the last two years of the WAFLW competition. “I think every club has to go in with that aim for the season, but we feel we have a great list and good depth in our squad to be competitive for long periods of matches”.
“Making the Grand Final last year under Amy Lavell, who did an amazing job, obviously hurt but it’s a new year and season and we will definitely be looking to go as far as we can in 2021” Farmer said.
With positions to fill in the league side, some players are set to have breakout seasons, including Jess Ritchie, who has had a solid pre-season and taking a lot of the ruck responsibilities with Danika taking the year off. “She’s fit and mobile and has been training the house down in lead up to round 1”.
“Jayme Harken and Caitlin Walker have been outstanding since day one but I think Charlie Thomas will be the one to watch. At 17 she’s a natural footballer who uses the ball extremely well and makes reliable decisions” said Farmer.
