LEAGUE

This past Saturday in overcast, windy conditions saw Subiaco head down to Shark Park to face up against a competitive East Freo side. The Lions held their nerve as the Sharks brought the pressure in a tight three quarters, but it was the five goals to one in favour of Subi in the last quarter that saw them pull away with a 33-point victory.

On a high, Subiaco now sits top of the ladder going into round three.

East Freo got off to a fast start kicking three unanswered goals with the wind up until Harry Marsh kicked one from beyond 50 to get the Lions up and going.

The margin was just seven pointsA going into the first break after a shaky start from Subi, yet they showed resilience as they fought back in the second term kicking four goals to East Freo’s two minor scores, giving the Lions a boost with a 16 point lead going into half time.

The tables turned in the third when the Sharks showed they weren’t finished yet as they kicked their first goal since half way through the first term. East Freo booted three unanswered to Subi’s wayward kicking in front of goal putting the margin down to just two in the Lion’s favour leaving it up to the last quarter to determine the the result.

Statements were made in the last when Subi showed their class around the ground and getting it into their front half for 13 shots at goal, five of those going through the big sticks. Greg Clark kicked the first of the quarter to put a gap to the Sharks The dominance was on show and the quarter belonged to the Lions as they kept the Sharks to just two opportunities to score, minimising anything to counteract a Subiaco win.

Overall, stats showed Subi’s win as they won the inside-50s count 48-37 and scoring shots 26 - 13 and although a close one, claimed the tackle count also, 71 - 69.

Greg Clark and Harry Marsh were in Subiaco’s best for the game racking up 21 and 18 possessions respectively, Clark’s pressure built 11 tackles and Marsh’s four shots at goal finishing with 2.2 were all instrumental in Subi coming away with the four points. Kitchin also reciprocated what he made of himself last week, with yet another stellar performance; 28 disposals, 10 tackles and 6 inside-50s

Worth noting is the Marsh v Marsh match up this past weekend, when the two ex-AFL brothers came up against each other for the first time in the WAFL, both players stepping up when their team needed them. Harry Marsh kicked Subi’s first goal of the game in what looked like to be a blowout by the Sharks in the first quarter and later on in the match East Freo Jonathon Marsh booting a 60-metre bomb to give the Sharks a bit of hope again after the Lions didn’t look like stopping.

The Lions had another wide range of goal kickers this week with eight seperate players making it onto the scoreboard. Ryan Borchet, along with his handy 15 disposals, put three goals on for the Lions and could’ve been more finishing with 6 scoring shots in total. Additionally, new youngster Jordan Faraone continued to show why he’s been an exciting new addition to the team with another two majors this week. Lutherland, Clark, Delahunty, Sokol and Menegola all also contributed to the 33 point triumph kicking a goal each.

Although their minor scores outweighed their six-pointers, the Lions will be pleased to finish on top after such a tight and well fought out contest.

Subiaco will be matched against West Perth this Saturday as they head up to Provident Financial Oval, hoping to solidify their spot at the top of the table and be a team to watch out for in season 2021. Bounce down is at 2:10pm.
