This ANZAC weekend, Subiaco in their second home game of the season at Leederville Oval is up against West Coast who would want their form to make some changes moving forward. Looks to be a big occasion for the return of the Andrew Christie Cup and a round of footy honouring those who sacrificed all, the Lions’ game will kick off at 3:10pm in what will be optimal conditions.
Keep an eye on Subiaco’s social media channels and app for updates across the day if you cannot make it to the game.
FORM
Subiaco had the start to the season they wanted in terms of cashing in the four points for each occasion, in which they have done so up to this point. Along with round one’s 28-point win over East Perth, Subi’s round two clash with East Freo ended in similar fashion with a fourth quarter dominance and 33-point margin in the end. It was last week’s round three fixture against an impressive West Perth that brought about the Lion’s first real down-to-the-wire test in a suspenseful match up throughout, leaving the 3-point margin in favour of Subi when the final siren sounded. These past two games show Subi can win anywhere and under a high pressure and quality side as an opponent. Each game so far presenting much to learn from and to pride themselves on. Individually, consistent showings from Marsh, Kitchin, Rodhe, Delahunty and Clark being in Subi’s best of the first three games with Sokol also tallying eight goals for the start of the season.
OPPONENTS FORM
West Coast is struggling to find form so far in season 2021 sitting equal bottom of the ladder alongside East Perth after recording no victories from three games. Round one, the Eagles were outclassed by 13 points in the first game of the season against Perth, followed up by a match up they’ll surely want to forget in a 78-point missed opportunity against the Falcons. Most recently, a tough game but brave performance by the Eagles against a slick Swan Districts at home last week, falling short by 39. Knowing the quality side they can be and the good signs they’ve showed, this poor run of form will be something the Eagles will hope to address in their biggest challenge of the year so far against the Lions this week.
GOAL KICKERS:
The most recent time these teams met was in the latter part of the 2019 premiership season for round 16. Subi came away 68-point victors in a commanding performance with a total of 24 scoring shots for 15 goals. The familiar face up forward of Ben Sokol booted four majors for the game along with his 13 touches around the ground. Ryan Borchet with three, Max Walters (19 touches) and Ex-Lions, now East Perth player, Tom Edwards-Baldwin with two as well. It was veteran Delahunty that had game high 31 disposals and three shots at goal, Kyal Horsely wasn’t too far behind with 28 touches to go with his seven tackles and five inside-50s game. Highest ball getter for West Coast was Hamish Brayshaw, 25 touches and two shots at goal, with teammates Brander, Vardy, McInnes and Hug all kicking one of the four goals each.
LAST TWO TIMES:
The previous two times the Lions faced West Coast was back in the 2019 season, in which Subiaco declared their 15th Premiership, as West Coast opted out of the shortened, COVID affected 2020 season. Round 16 was a home game for Subi as they further displayed what was to come a few weeks later when claiming the win by 68 in the end. Prior to this, in round 6, was the first time in both teams history to play each other as it was West Coast’s debut season in the WAFL. Took place at Leederville Oval, in this case it was again Subi to win it by 15 points, although a closer one in the end with the home team nearly falling short from their poor scoring accuracy. Given such short history to account for, this game will give an indication of where these teams seasons are at with the result.
OTHER GRADES
Given the Futures team have completed their season, the Colts and Reserves Lions team will not be playing this week, the day belongs to the Subiaco Womens Team who will be playing East Freo at 1pm and the league boys’ match up with West Coast will kick off at 3:10pm. Both games will be played at Leederville Oval.
