Round Recap v Claremont

Monday, May 10, 2021 - 1:11 PM by Alice Miller

A tough contest leading up to it, this past weekend saw the League and Colts boys claim the four points, but reserves falling short all against the quality side of Claremont.

LEAGUE
Following on from last week, serving Subi their first loss of the season, the Lions faced another challenge on Saturday as they went head to head with 2020 Grand Finalist’s Claremont, in what was expected to be just as much of a grind as the week prior. Subiaco prevailed and ended up winning comfortable despite a Tigers fightback in the second half, handing the away team their first loss of the season.

The first term showed good signs for the home team, picking up where they left off prior to the round 4 intermission and back to their best despite a loss last week. It was an eight scoring shots to Claremont’s three for the first 25 minutes.

Although, where the game turned was in the second quarter when Subiaco advanced themselves with the best position to win the match up going into half time. Claremont showed some fight, having a period of complete dominance of the ground getting repeat entries inside-50 early in the term, but it was in the latter part of the quarter when Subi booted five goals to get the margin out to 48 at the main break. The Lions kicked 6.1 all whilst holding the Tigers goalless with the away team struggling to capitalise on their opportunities, kicking four points to end the first half.

The start of the second half provided an expected Claremont response after lacking goals in the first half. The quick reply of two majors by Claremont’s McCracken and Manuel to begin the third showed a glimpse of hope for the Tigers in search of a huge comeback. The Lions didn’t let this pass them as they also had their own opportunities in front of goal including Jordan Faraone fancy footwork third quarter finisher, topping the lead out to 50 points.

The final term was a closer contest with bodies tiring, but with both sides having equal amount of opportunities to boost their percentages, Claremont claimed the last quarter 3.3 to Subi’s 1.5, turning the final margin down to 40 points when the siren sounded.

Delahunty, Clark and Marsh topped the Lions disposal count with 77 touches between them. Braut showed his class on Saturday, finishing with 27 touches, twelve marks in an BOG performance, providing a wall of defence holding his own, especially in the spurts of Tiger’s breaking away. Matthew Johnson had his first league hit out at Leederville Oval and looked to settle in nicely as he enjoyed the win the boys on the weekend as well.

This win sees the Lions returning to top of the table with just percentage separating them and Claremont sitting second.

Subiaco had a mixed bag of goal kickers this week with Nick Martin kicking the most with four, Faraone booted three along with Stainsby, Clark, Borchet, Delahunty, Putt and Heal all also featuring on the scoreboard with one each.

Subi will have a week off for this weekend as the competition has a bye, but following that they will be up against Swan Districts up at Swan’s home ground Steele Blue Oval on the 22nd.

COLTS
It was Round 6 of the Simply Energy Colts competition and Subiaco were at home as they came up against Claremont on Mother’s Day. It was Subi’s day as they came away with the four points with just a kick in it after a tight loss last week.

Claremont got off to a fast start as they booted four from their six scoring shots and Subiaco struggled to match that with only one goal for the quarter. This quickly changed when the Lions turned on the heat and responded with five goals for the second term yet couldn’t quite reach the Tigers just yet as the away team lead by less than a goal going into the main break.

The tight contest continued into the second half, but the Lion’s streamed past the Tigers leading by 12 for the five goal to one quarter that Subi produced for the result to be determined in the final 25 minutes.

Right down to the wire, Subiaco managed to hold on despite a Claremont scare coming within just a goal to being the victors. Subi’s two minor scores for the final term ended up being a lucky two points as the Tigers had four shots at goal for 2.2 leaving the scoreboard reading 11.7 (73) to the home team and 10.7 (67) for Claremont to rue their missed opportunities.

Jacob Evitt had an all-rounded performance with 26 touches, five inside-50s booting two goals as well. Jed Kemp also put on a display with 23 disposals and team high pressure acts with six tackles.

Subiaco had a few different names featured on the goal kickers list. Koltyn Tholstrup kicked team high 3 goals for the day, Evitt and Clark with 2 along with Quarrell, Dean, Bolton and Corderoy with one each.

This win moves the Colts up to fifth on the ladder and will look to move further up next time they play in round 7 against Swan Districts on May 22nd.

WAFLW LEAGUE

Subiaco had a positive weekend as their Mother’s Day match up against Claremont resulted in their fourth win of the season as they mark more of a mark on their season. The Lions came away 11 point winners and will look to continue this good form for next weeks fixture against Swans in round 12.

Subiaco claimed the first quarter (1.3) despite Claremont having one more scoring shot (0.5). Claremont then woke up and started to kick straighter as they capitalised on their three shots at goal for 2.1 and held Subiaco to just one shot at goal for a minor addition to the score. The Tigers had the lead by eight going into the main break.

In a seesawing affair, the momentum changed again after half time and went in Subiaco’s favour as they added two unanswered goals, grabbing back the lead and put themselves in the front seat for the final term. With Claremont unable to add on any further score from their third term total, Subiaco went on their way to kick another and relieved to win a tight contest.

Hayley Miller was in imposing form being amongst Subiaco’s best for the day kicking three out of four of the team’s goals with Jayme Harken having her part kicking the other major for the day.

The Lions now sit fourth on the ladder with four wins of the year so far looking to make it three consecutive wins in a row in this week’s match up with Swan Districts.
