It’s back to business after a week off for the Lions and they face the challenge of Swans Districts at Steel Blue Oval this weekend.
The boys sit top of the table with percentage separating them from Claremont in second and given the recent track record against the Swans, Subi look in good position to continue this dominance when they go head to head with the Black and White this Saturday.
FORM
Subiaco have had an impressive season so far, bar the round five loss against the reigning premiers in South Fremantle. Most recently, the Lions claimed the four points against a tough opponent in Claremont two weekends ago. Subi had complete control of the game for the first half with a 48 point lead into the main break. Despite a minor fight back from the Tigers in the third, Subiaco didn’t let the game out of their grasp as they finished 40 point victors. Along with this triumph, Subi have won by an average margin of 33 points three out of four of their wins this season with the exemption to the triumph they clinched in the final moments of the clash against West Perth in the small margin of three points.
Consistent performances from key figures in the Subiaco line up have been crucial in these successes, including Delahunty’s 29 touches and a goal freshest in our memory against Claremont. Faraone now leads Subi’s goal kicking tally with 12 on the trot, jumping past Sokol on 10 for the season.
OPPONENTS FORM
In the Swan Districts five matches so far they’ve recorded three wins including a big 50 point victory against Perth back in round two. The Swans have recently lost to West Perth in round five prior to the state game bye for the weekend just gone. In a close game all the way down to the last term, it was the Falcons that claimed the four points in a final margin of nine. In the end, a game worth forgetting as the Swans had the game under their terms for the first half but after West Perth spiked in the third quarter the game quickly slipped away from the away team in a four goals to zip final term.
Sam Fisher has been highest ball getter for the Swans racking up 154 touches over the five games including his 41 in the team’s biggest win of the year so far against Perth. Jesse Palmer is the leading goal kicker for the Black and White with 13 majors for the season.
GOAL KICKERS
It was round three of last year’s shortened season that these two teams last met in which Subi ran away 39 point victors.
The Lions’ well-known figure up forward, Ben Sokol claimed three of the eleven Subi goals for the day with the load being shared to Nick Martin and Ex-Lion Kyal Horsely to also add on another two each.
Big man Delahunty got the most of the ball for Subiaco with 24 touches along with six tackles. Not too far behind was Hayden Kennedy with 22 disposals and four inside 50s.
LAST TWO TIMES
Clashes between these two sides have been owned my Subiaco of further back to last five match ups in recent years. Subi grabbed the four points in round three last year by 39 points and looked to have control of the game from the get go. Lions stormed home in a four goals to one final term and made the moments count in the shortened season.
Prior to that, Subiaco hosted the Swans at Leederville oval and sent them back home with a 62 point smashing. In what could’ve been a worse scenario for the away team, the Lions finished with 31 scoring shots but only 15 goals. Kitchin, Horsely and Delahunty each had their own ball with 30+ touches each, while Sokol had a complete day out with kicking a bag for nine scoring shots.
