Match Recap v Swan Districts

Monday, May 24, 2021 - 1:34 PM by Alice Miller

It was a weekend of narrow margins across all grades against Swan Districts in a wet weather footy display. Only League were beneficiaries of the four points this round, but across the other three games the largest margin was just eight, a win for the League boys but an eight-point loss given to Colts. Reserves and Women’s team falling short by only a point.

LEAGUE
Just as predicted, it was an overcast and wet Saturday, but Subi found a way to finish on top and walk away narrow victors against a brave Swans’ outfit.

Pressure was on early from both sides in strong efforts to move the ball forward, evidently resulting in a few unforced errors. Although, the Lions had the first say when Chad Harris got the scoring started with the opening goal. The first term was eventually won by Subi as they had a 11 point lead at the first break.

The second half went on to favour Subiaco as they added to their lead. Around halfway through the quarter, Greg Clark, who’s been in ripping form as of late, blasted one from the top of the 50-metre arc, nailing it through the big sticks. This short passage of play held the game in Subi’s favour as what followed was a rain- affected messy last few minutes of the first half.

Swans, however got the game back within reach after half time, trailing by less than a kick going into the last term. They kicked the only two goals of the quarter to Subi’s two minor scores. Leaving it to the final term, where Subiaco had to assert themselves on the scoreboard to win the game. Four scoring shots to one, Subi had the four points under the belt when backman, Braut kicked the final goal of the game, eventuating to a final eight point winning margin to the away team.

Subiaco’s top performers, Marsh, Kitchin and Delahunty continued to add to their disposal count this season, a total of 85 between them. Meanwhile, one of the early favourites for the Sandover Medallist this year, Greg Clark had a day out in a complete performance. 30 possessions, Twelve tackles, six inside 50s and two goals for the game. This guy continues to put in the hard yards and reaps the rewards week in week out, including the call up for a state game appearance last week where he had another quality showing.

Kitchin, Braut, Delahunty, Harris, Heal and Faraone were the individual goal kickers for the match up, sharing the load with a major each.

This win sees Subiaco holding top spot on the ladder, but not alone, sharing it with Claremont just 3% above them.

Next week is a home game against Peel Thunder on Saturday for bouncedown at 2:10pm in the afternoon.

RESERVES
Subiaco Reserves team had the bitter pill to swallow of falling short by the narrowest of margins on the weekend, 9.6 (60) to Swan Districts 9.7 (61).

Less than a kick separated them at half time, Subi leading by five. The Lions turned it on in the third for a four goal quarter and held the lead and looked strong for the final 25 minutes to play. The Black and White didn’t stay quiet for long and made up the 17-point deficit with an additional seven points. Although Subi replied and equalled the goals, a lucky minor score had the final say when the Lions tallied their fourth loss of the season.

Ex- AFL star Brandon Matera, bar the preseason fixture earlier in the year, had his first hit out of the season and played to his strengths in an impressive display. Only on for limited minutes, he had 16 touches, four marks and two goals on the weekend and proves to be looking to put his hand up for selection this week for the League team. Kaidyn Fullgrabe and Ben Golding also had quality performances with 28 and 26 disposals respectively.

This sees the team sit fifth on the ladder and will hope for a move upwards when they play Peel this Saturday at 11:30 for round eight.

COLTS

Subiaco Colts suffered a tight eight point loss over the weekend in what was a wet and grind of a game. Starting off strong, the boys were leading after the first quarter but sae couldn’t be said for finishing off the first half. Knowing the tough contest it was going to be, the Lions had it coming in the third quarter when, although they equalled the Swans score and were playing catch up for the remainder of the game. Subi matched the Swans three goal third term but were left searching for the final margin of eight in the final 25 minutes.

Neil Erasmus and Jacob Evitt topped Subiaco’s disposal count for the day each with 27 touches and accumulative three shots at goal. Erasmus also piled on the pressure with seven tackles and made it count with six inside-50s. The goal kicking load was shared as there were seven individual goal kickers; Thompson, Morris, South, Moses, Dean, Tamlin and Tholstrup.

Subi are now sitting equal fourth with three wins on the board with two of their three losses being a margin less than ten on both occasions. Next game will be at home against the struggling Peel Thunder at 9 on Saturday morning.

WOMENS

In what was a bit of a stalemate of a game, Subiaco were unable to clinch victory after scoring for the game was finished at half time.
The first term had nothing in it, Subi leading by just a point and wet weather being evident in both teams attempts to move the ball forward. The game kept this same momentum when the second quarter produced an identical situation at to the 25 minutes prior, only one minor score in favour of the Swans was splitting the two teams.

othing more had to be said for the clash after the scoreboard remained unchanged up until the final siren sounded. This performance by Subiaco was, despite a second half dry of points, an impressive one against unbeaten and certainly formidable Swan Districts.

Holly Hyder, Kia Buckley and Hayley Corlett were the goal scorers in a what turned out to be a goal-lacking occasion.

Sitting at fourth on the ladder, Subiaco will also play Peel Thunder at home this week ith their game to be a late one on Saturday evening at 5:15pm.
