Round Recap v Peel Thunder

Round eight is done and dusted and Subi claimed three out of four wins on a waterlogged weekend against Peel. A day out for league ended in a 44 point victory leaving them to sit in top spot on the ladder, whilst Reserves also recorded a win but Colts falling short in tough conditions. 

Subi Women’s team had one of their best wins this season against one of the competition’s most challenging opponents. 

LEAGUE
Despite there being minimal rainfall, conditions were still poor but Subiaco managed to make it work. They had a cracking start to the match up with a five goals to zip first term. Peel couldn’t seem to get momentum with the ball as Inside 50s were 18 to 3 in favour of the Lions for the first 25 minutes. Peel got the ball rolling in the second with a score on the board and won the entries inside 50s 15 to 9 for 2.4. 

The second half produced a further five goals for the home team, but in true wet weather footy fashion, behinds outweighed the goals as Subi finished with 28 scoring shots, 17 of them being minor scores.

The Lions are ranked the number one tackling team in the comp and finished the game with 80 to 61, five Subi players having six of those each. Harry Marsh had a ripper, 24 possessions, six tackles and team-high three goals as he continues to put in consistent appearances. Litherland was also amongst Subiaco’s best for the day averaging 15 touches a game, had 21 on the weekend along with five tackles as held strong down back. Clark added to his tally with most tackles for the comp with another six paired with his 30 touches. 

Notably, the first-gamer in Brandon Matera had a solid performance,15 disposals, three tackles and to make it even sweeter, booted his first goal in his new colours against old foes. 

This soaked win was Subiaco’s ticket to top spot on the ladder but with Claremont hot on their heels, Thursday night’s fixture under lights against Perth will be Subi's chance to push top spot out of reach from others and continue the dominance moving forward. 

RESERVES
An end to end tight contest finished with only the small margin of five in Subiaco’s favour. 
In a drenched game, the Lions kicking seemed to be most affected by the conditions with their scoreline reading 1.11 going into half time, meaning Peel were in front by only an accuracy in front of goal. Subi’s wayward kicking didn’t stop there but neither did their goal scoring, with another 6 for the rest of the game. The game ended up being a tale of ‘lucky points’ as it was less than a kick in it when the final siren sounded, much to Peel’s dismay with their 11 behinds to Subi’s 16. 

Kaidyn Fullgrabe and Ben Golding both had 20 plus disposals, Golding with nine tackles and seven tackles to go with it. Given the the wayward kicking for the day, Subi had seven singular goal scorers; Robbins, Ash, Page, Golding, Farmer, Robinson and Breman. 

Subiaco are playing Perth this week away at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday at 11:40am. 

COLTS
Subiaco’s Colts had the toughest conditions to play in and had a difficult opponent to begin with in Peel. Game started tight and in good stead given the rain with scores level after quarter time. Subi’s scoring stopped after half time as Peel made it a tough gig to score against them. Despite inside 50s being 40 to 45 which was in favour of Peel, the Lions managed just 11 scoring shots on a  wet day. 

Jed Kemp topped the disposal count with 30 touches and also had eight tackles. Matt Johnson had team high nine tackles and with 21 touches, seven inside 50s was one of Subiaco’s best in a disappointing day. Koltyn Tholstrup kicked two of the three goals for the day with Jacob Evitt kicking the other.  

Colts will be playing Perth on Saturday morning at 9:10 in hopes of getting back on the winners list.
