A tough weekend for Subiaco saw them face a narrow loss to a competitive West Coast side on Saturday in ideal conditions for footy. The Eagles chances in what looked to be a tough game to win were boosted in a big way when a number of AFL listed players made their way into the team and were the difference between the sides on the weekend.

It was a slow start to the game for the Lions up until Wil Hickmott’s goal on the first siren, still West Coast held the lead by just over two goals.

However, Subi started to win it in the clinches to bring themselves back into the game, roaring the ball forward after a number of  forward 50 entries and capitalising on the opportunities they got to score which then managed to get them the lead by a point going into half time.

Third term started off in true fashion of the competition’s in-form forward at the moment, Ben Sokol showing some party tricks with a goal kicked backwards over his head. Eagles however from then on started to pull away with eight scoring shots to Subi’s four for the quarter, but keeping the game within reach when Sokol kicked a late one to finish.

The fourth quarter a much tighter contest as Subiaco pegged a few back with the help of Sokol’s four goals for the term. In what was an even quarter, the polish from the experienced forward and the fast paced ball movement  through the middle from the Lions in the final term, wasn’t enough for the small lead the Eagles managed to hold onto after a crucial free quick was awarded to West Coast in the dying stages resulting in the winning goal.

In a disappointing result, the game was quality from not just the Eagles’ big names that made a difference, but Subiaco’s consistent showstoppers continued to give their best on Saturday. Including one of Subi’s most dependable players in Hayden Kennedy with 20 touches who is averaging 21 disposals a game this year. In spreading the load more than half the team had over 15 touches each, including Kitchin having 22, Marsh 21, Clark 20 and Wil Hickmott with the 20 as well for the day.

Sokol, who has now kicked 12 goals over the last two games, performed to his strengths in another six goal performance with his 17 disposals and seven marks. Braut had two for his own, Martin, Putt and Wil Hickmott all featuring with one each as well.

Subi will hope for the winning feeling again this weekend when they host Swan Districts on Saturday at 2:10pm.
