Monday, June 28, 2021 - 1:15 PM by Alice Miller

Subiaco look forward to round 13 after they suffered the smallest of margins once again over the weekend against Swan Districts. Across all grades Subi Reserves team were the only beneficiaries of the four points for this round, where Colts endured a tough loss and the Womens had the bitter pill to swallow of a prelim loss putting an end to their season.

Subiaco league team were on the receiving end of a history breaking result on Saturday where they couldn’t keep the six year streak going of having the wood over the Black and Whites and fell short by a point 8.5 (53) to 7.12 (54). A one-point loss could’ve been much bigger margin given the Swans had 19 scoring shots but only seven of them were goals.

The Swans got the jump on them early with four scoring shots to none for Subi, scoring the first goal of the game before Subi’s milestone man Sokol kicked one back.

Subi looked to reign back the momentum that was in Swans favour having more intensity around the ball but couldn’t hold them off as they matched the pressure and made it a 16-point deficit at half time.

The margin was narrowed down to 13 points in the third term and momentum started to fall into Subi’s favour with a few too many missed opportunities to the Swans.

The final term was a three goal to one quarter for the home team and the Lions seemed to have had the game up until the fateful lucky point the Swans held was the difference, breaking a six year long drought.

The Skipper Kitchin had the most of the ball for Subi on the day, 25 touches, 8 tackles and a goal, while young gun Nick Martin was impressive on a disappointing day with three majors and got his share of the footy with 14 disposals and nine marks. The main-man up forward cracked the ton on Saturday and has now made a feature on the scoreboard consecutively for the last four games with another goal this weekend, bringing his tally to 24 for the season.

Next week, Subiaco will be heading south to David Grays Arena to take on Peel on Sunday at 2:10pm to hopefully get back on the winners list.

RESERVES
Subi’s reserves scored the lone four points for the club over the weekend in a good win against Swan Districts 9.9 (63) to 9.3 (59).

A cracking start, six scoring shots to one in the first term meant a 21-point margin in favour of the Lions for the start of the Second quarter.

Subi held the lead at every break from then on, levelling their number of goals to points kicked on each occasion and managed to hold off a Swans team that kept coming until the end. Swans equalling the goals kicked by Subi but just four minor scores determined the result and enabled a win to the home side.

Ben Golding was the highest ball getter, 25 possessions, five tackles and capped it off with two goals too. Johnny Narkle joined him with two majors and got his hands on the ball for 15 touches.

The win sees Subi jump up a spot into the top four, sitting fourth on five wins and four losses for the season. Next week, Peel will host Subi down at David Grays Arena as well, playing before the League at 11:40am.

COLTS
The Colts weren’t at their best and also on the receiving end of a tough loss over the weekend, scoring four goals 4.1 (25) to the better side for the day, Swans 15.15 (105).

From the get go did the game seem out of reach for the home team, just two scoring shots to 14 going into half time and only adding a further two for the second half.

Swans have had a ripper of a season thus far, so the task of clashing with them was always to be the Lions’ toughest match up. They’ve won their last five in a row and have only lost one for the season, so given Subi weren’t 100% made it all the more challenging to get a win against an impressive Swans line up.

Jed Kemp had the stand out performance of 25 touches, four tackles and seven marks. Ruckman Jake South with his 18 hitouts had nine tackles and two goals in a tough day at the office.

Subiaco will be heading south with the rest of the club on Saturday, playing their game to kick off the day at 9:10 to hopefully push past Peel and get back to their winning ways.

WOMENS
It was the heartbreak that Subi didn’t want to face on Sunday up at Steel Blue Oval when they fell short to make it back-to-back grand final appearances. They suffered, 1.6 (12) to Swans 7.8 (50) in their final game of 2021, but will look back on the progress and determination that got them there with heads held high.

It was a tight first term, just one point in it at the first break and even more so in the second term when scoring shots were level. Although, scoreboard pressure wasn’t in play for the Lions as they kicked only a further five minor scores where Swans extra goal defined the five point margin at half time in favour of the home team.

In hopes of a refresh after half time to reset and reload for the rest of the game, in the third term it was Swans who did just that and put on 2.2 in comparison to Subi 0.1 and started to take the game away from the Lions.

It was the in the early stages of the final quarter that the Black and Whites pulled away and grabbed a substantial lead all while holding Subi scoreless for the remainder of the game. It showed how vital it is when the momentum is swung in the teams’ favour as once the Swans got going they were most difficult to stop, booking their spot in the big dance next week by 38-points.

Subiaco finished strong in 2021 as toward the backend of the season showed that throughout the year they were building for what was a third consecutive finals campaign and displayed just how good they can be.

Amy Hunt (16.12), Kia Buckley (9.7) and Hayley Corlett (6) reigned top three for Subi this year in goal kicking and were consistent performers all season round.

It’s time to reload for next year and hopefully roll on with this form into season 2022 for yet another campaign to get to and win the ultimate.

SWAN DISTRICTS  1.3   2.4   4.6   7.8  (50)
