Match Preview v South Freo presented by CSG Marketing (https://csg.marketing/)
This Sunday its Lions vs Bulldogs for round 16 in the 2021 Optus WAFL premiership season. With both teams sitting equal first on the ladder, Subi are looking to make up for the loss earlier in the season to the reigning champs but will be fully aware of what the Bulldogs are capable of.
As mentioned, it’s a Sunday 2:10pm game this week and will feature more of the wet weather of recent weeks, but come down to support the boys for another home game at Leederville Oval.
Keep an eye on Subiaco’s social media channels and app for updates across the day if you cannot make it to the game.
FORM
Subi are now back on their feet after they ended their two-game losing streak a few weeks back. They regained their dominance over West Coast last week when although a close game for three out of four quarters, they were able to finish off strong in true Subiaco fashion to get the win by 20 points. Prior to that, a win over Perth set them back on the path bouncing back from two straight losses and regained top spot in a 27-point win. The Lions’ big margin wins earlier on in the season have set them up for a good 20% above Claremont and this week’s opponent South Freo also sitting on nine wins and three losses meaning Subi are in a good position to keep themselves up there if the wins keep on coming.
OPPONENTS FORM
South Freo are tracking along nicely as they also have 36 premiership points stored in the bank for nine wins and three losses and last week came off a solid 36 point victory over Swan Districts. So far their losses have been to fellow ladder leaders Claremont, an upset loss in round 7 against Perth and another shock loss to East Perth in round 10. The reigning premiers however have showed signs of their 2020 season in plenty displays of quality performances throughout the year and will surely look to keep that going this week.
GOAL KICKERS
Subi have a new goal kicker to add to their list now that two-gamer Josh Robbins got his name on the scoreboard last week. He joins 21 other Subi players to have booted one through the big sticks and contribute to the wins tallied. Last time they met with South Freo in round 5 this year, Sokol produced a two goal game along with Nick Martin, while Delahunty, Harris, Faraone, Putt and Heal all had their input with a goal each.
LAST TWO TIMES
The last two encounters with South Freo haven’t been the most joyous experiences as last year’s game in round 4 and in a premiership winning season for the Bulldogs, was a big 50-point win to Souths 15.7(97) and disappointing loss for Subi 7.5 (47). The match up earlier this year had better signs with not much separating the two sides, scoring shots 20 to 17 in favour of the Bulldogs and Subi even winning the hitouts 45-43. Although it was an 18-point deficit in the end for the Lions, this time round and at this point in the season with the near identical runs of form from both sides this year, this week’s game will surely be a cracker and will give indication of a finals series to come.
OTHER GRADES
Subi’s Colts and Reserves teams are back to business this week both set to play South Fremantle joining the league boys at Leederville Oval and also to be played on Sunday 25th July. Colts game will be the first for the day at 9:10am followed by Reserves at 11:40am.
