Team Announcements v West Perth
There’s been much to like across all areas in Subi’s team of recent weeks, each clearly contributing the hot run of form at the moment.
League bouncedown against West Perth is 2.10pm at Leederville Oval
‘The Backs r bruising ’em’
Written in bold, Subi’s backline and last week’s statement of a win against the Bulldogs go hand in hand. Some would say a clinic of defensive skills was put on show from the Lions down back furthering on from showings weeks prior when they faced West Coast pressing in the final term yet Subi’s backline proved to experienced and too strong to eventually outlast them. Last week, South Freo got themselves inside 50 for a total of 34 times (Subi 51 times) through all four quarters, but it was the likes of Lockyer, Fullgrabe and Stainsby to name a few that denied the Dogs no more than nine looks at goal. Nine shots at goal for 34 entries is something to pride themselves on especially against the team to beat this year and an equally intimidating forward line from the opposition. Other mainstays down there like Dewar, Rohde and Heal accumulatively averaging over 10 marks a game and 14, 16 and 15 disposals each per game all fit into the style of play that has been paying off more often than not this year.
‘Mean midfield’
It’s no secret the depth and pure talent that overflows Subi’s midfield and the numbers certainly don’t lie. Three of the regular faces in the middle are ranked in the top 15 disposal getters across the comp. Subi’s captain Leigh Kitchin doesn’t fail to lead from the front each week now averaging 27 possessions, 5 marks and 6 tackles a game. Standing alongside him are Harry Marsh average of 24 touches and Greg Clark leading the tackle count and his average of getting his hands on the ball, 29. Chad Harris has really come into his own in his debut Subi season, showing what he’s made of being one of Subi’s best on-ballers. Along with Harris, the Hickmott brothers are having some of their best career form this year and all three are averaging over 17 touches a game. The actual middle men, Delahunty, Putt and newcomer Oskar Matthews are the most crucial part of winning it in the stoppages and to show just how much, the two more experienced Delahunty and Putt are in the top 10 of hitouts won at the moment in the competition.
‘Firing forwards’
Subi are fifth in the comp for goals this year with have an accuracy of 55%, however they are getting plenty of supply inside forward 50. All, bar one in round four, have Subi won or equalled the inside 50 count in the 13 games played this year, so there’s no questioning the efforts to put the team in the best position to score and ideally win the game. Once getting in there the face the kickers like to look for the most is the one with the impressive track record, Ben Sokol, who at this stage sits at fifth spot on the board after kicking 29.18 in two less games than those above him. Josh Robbins kicked his first goal in his second of three league WAFL games, the new small forward kicking hopefully more goals to come thick and fast comes as a package deal with what he does off the ball and the high intensity he brings to contests he’s involved in. These two along with the rest of the gang up forward still remains a daunting prospect for opposition as there’s always multiple avenues of goal.
