Round Recap v West Perth
Round 17 is history after the Lions ticked off their eleventh win of the season, while the Ressies and colts team faced tough losses to the worthy opponent in West Perth.
LEAGUE
Subi looked to put their foot down early, bombarding West Perth in a flurry of inside 50s for 12 scoring shots. Subi brought immense pressure often causing skill errors by the opponent and many a turnovers. Inside 50s were 22 to eight in favour of the fast-starting Lions in which three out of the four first quarter goals were off the back of Brandon Matera’s classy display in the first 25 minutes. Although kicking eight behinds for the quarter, Subi were able to set up a 32-point lead going into the second term.
West Perth seemed to take notice of the game quickly slipping away from them and started to play with a bit more intensity contributing 2.3 for the quarter and actually won the term from the 2.1 Lions kicked, yet the home team still holding a 30-point lead going into half time.
Subi produced more of the first half goodness early on after the main break. Sokol joined the party kicking his only major for the day, while Greg Clark and Harry Marsh were leading in Subi for disposals. The Falcons however weren’t gone for long kicking three in a row and reducing Subi’s lead to just over three straight kicks.
Brandon Matera kicked his fifth for the day in the final term and although the Falcons had their attempts to wrestle back momentum, Subi managed to hold onto a 20-point lead in the end winning 10.12 (72) to 8.4 (52).
Harry Marsh was the standout, 28 disposals, five tackles, five inside-50s and kicked 1.2. Brandon Matera along with kicking a bag had a bonus 15 touches and eight marks in his best figures of the year. Subi’s backline stood up once again composing themselves accordingly when under siege at points in the game. Aaron Heal had seven marks of his own along with 14 possessions having one of his better performances this season and Jordan Lockyer had the difficult task of manning up to in form forward Tyler Keitel and helped himself to 16 disposals.
Subi up top are now four points clear of second place after Claremont couldn’t get the win over the weekend. As a result, in what’s going to be one of the biggest games this season next week for round 18 Subi have the chance to further their lead above the Tigers on the ladder and hopefully make it a successful end to the season in weeks to come.

RESERVES
Coming off a high of a convincing win last week, Subi got hit with an equally big result just not being the beneficiaries of it this week. West Perth got the four points winning 9.10 (64) to 3.11 (29) and held the lead throughout all four quarters.
Subi’s slow start (1.1) meant West Perth (4.4) were the opposite. The Lions then had to make up for lost time in the second but couldn’t only go as far as a one goal addition for just three scoring shots. What helped their case however was West Perth’s just one look at goal and further adding just a minor score to their total, which meant, if they were up to it, Subi could make a turnaround.
The intention was there in the second half with nine scoring shots but despite all best efforts to do so, just one managed to go through the big sticks. West Perth didn’t face the same misfortune attempts with their 10 shots and nailed five of them to sail through the middle eventuating 35-point victors.
In a disappointing day for the twos, Noah Ash made his moments count, 20 touches, five marks and six tackles and joining him, ruckman Bailey Holt had 14 disposals with 19 hitouts to also be in Subi’s best for the day.
Jack Mayo (15 disposals) kicked one of the three goals for the game while Ben Golding and Jake Stergiou claimed the other two.
Subi got knocked down to sixth on the ladder now and will face top of the table Claremont in this week’s round 18 clash.

COLTS
Subi’s Colts had a tough loss over the weekend and will be looking forward to round 18 to hopefully redeem themselves in their chances to play finals.
Coming off two wins prior, West Perth were on a roll and kept the momentum coming at the bouncedown against the Lions, whereas Subi were having the week to recover from falling short to the Bulldogs last week and were ideally looking to reinstate their position in the comp with the intention of finals.
The Lions started the game on the back foot having just one look at goal but got themselves on the board for a goal in the second term. West Perth seemed to have a game of their own having 11 shots at goal to Subi’s four at half time.
Much didn’t change from that point onwards from a Subi point of view and it didn’t seem to be their day kicking more behinds than goals. Jed Kemp seemed to have his own footy as he piled on disposal after disposal finishing with 37 possessions showing him giving his all particularly in a mess of a game. Corey Bellouard wasn’t to far off Kemp having 28 touches of his own and special mention must be made to the two debutants Barbieri and Barton who had 21 and 11 touches respectively with Bratton also winning 12 hitouts in the stoppages. The two goal scorers for the day were Jacob Evitt and Ezekiel Bolton.
Still 7th on the ladder and in another or even more so of a must win clash this week, Subi will be up against the Tigers who are flying at the moment on Saturday morning.
