While Subiaco were getting on top of South Fremantle on Saturday, over in Kalgoorlie, Boulder City FC and Kalgoorlie City FC were battling out for the Goldfields Premiership Cup.
In almost perfect conditions at Sir Richard Moore Oval, the eight teams battled for top spot in their league in what was a day without controversy but more so some great quality football.
Game 1, Women’s: Boulder 1.4 (10) def Kalgoorlie 1.1 (7)
Kicking off the day was the Women’s Boulder v Kalgoorlie in the inaugural GFLW season. A very even battle made it tough for either team to put a score on the board. League F&B Kate Beswick was instrumental for Boulder who came away three-point victors.
Game 2, Colts: Kalgoorlie 10.18 (78) def Mines 2.1 (13)
An entertaining game that had everything happen saw Kangas come away upset victors. Mines looked dominant in the first half with plenty of centre clearances from Matt Dellar and miracle goals from Malachi Champion, but undisciplined play saw two yellow cards and a free goal at the three-quarter break. 10 minutes into the last quarter a headcount was called and Mines with 19 on the field had their score wiped. Caleb Paperone was strong throughout the day, getting the Kangas their Colts premiership.
Game 3, Reserves: Mines 14.8 (92) def Kalgoorlie 2.8 (20)
Mines too strong in reserves showing why they were minor premiers for 2021. Inaccuracy in front of goal made it difficult for Kalgoorlie to build momentum. Kieron Giblett was best on the day, setting up most of Mines scoring shots and kicking two himself.
Game 4, League: Kalgoorlie 14.5 (89) def Boulder 13.6 (84)
The best game was saved for last with the battle for the league premiership. Boulder were looking strong in the first, leading kicking 6, Kangas not far behind. A few lead changes through the next two quarters saw Kangas have an unbeatable lead going into the last. Boulder had all the momentum in the last, kicking two in the last 10 minutes and looking like kicking another. With the likes of Palmer and Hams down back driving play and Piggott kicking 5 majors, Kal City were too strong finishing 2021 GFL premiers.
Subiaco Talent Manager, Stuart Berryman was there to view the action, “It was to see such great competition out in our regional zone from women’s through to league. Props must go to all the staff at the GFL on what was a challenging but well run 2021 season and congratulations to all the successful teams.
