14's Development Carnival
While all the attention was on the WAFL grand final last weekend, the Subiaco 14s were playing off against East Perth and Claremont in the 14s Development Carnival.
Game 1 against East Perth was played in poor conditions at Leederville on Friday. The B-side kicked off first with a strong start thanks to Josh Hillbrands with 5 goals in the opening half. Jesse Povey was dominant in the centre and with efforts from Thaddeaus Bowen down back, Subiaco were able to pull away with their first victory of the carnival.
Rain held off for the A’s but Leederville oval was looking more like a swimming pool than a football field. Subiaco were too strong for East, playing the conditions better. Esperance talent Jaxson Meyer got plenty of the ball setting up the likes of Darcy Montgomery up forward who finished with a bag of goals. The backline held strong led by Denver Antulov allowing Subiaco 2 wins for the first day of the carnival.
Day 2 saw Subiaco up against Claremont at Leederville Oval on Tuesday, in slightly more favourable conditions. The B’s were up first and looking dominant in the first half but were unable to kick straight keeping Claremont in the game. In a coaching masterstroke, Marshell Linto was pushed to half back and his run created a lot of opportunities for the Browne brothers and Kyle McKenzie who ended up with a few each. Kalgoorlie and Esperance boys Kasey Murison & Zac Curnow were solid in defence allowing Subi to come away 9 point victors.
Game 2 was a close battle between the A’s. Teams neck and neck throughout the first half. Was a big game for the small boys Jake Tucker, Mark Stokes and Sam Parker linking up through the centre. Hayden Burt damaging around the ground and Dylan Prance cleaning up at half-back with a number of great intercept marks. Subi were able to ride some momentum in the second half kicking some goals and pulling away with a nice win.
Talent Manager Stuart Berryman was very impressed with the boy “It’s great to see the boys get a few wins for their efforts they put in over the course of our 14s development program. More pleasing was seeing the boys pick up some new footy skills and be able to put them into action in these carnival games. We’ve got a talented bunch in the age group and I’m excited to see where they can take their footy”
