WAWFL - Round 6 Recap

Tuesday, November 16, 2021 - 2:08 PM by Derek Mott

Subiaco’s wheelchair footballers had a night to forget in Round 6 of the WA Wheelchair Football League played last Thursday night at HBF Stadium, losing both their matches.

The Lions’ first match saw them up against East Perth, who were smarting from their three-point loss to Swan Districts in the previous match. The Royals started strongly to open up a 16-point lead at quarter-time before going on a scoring blitz, piling on 6.5 to 1.4 for the rest of the match and keeping the Lions to just 1.1 after half-time. East Perth’s midfielders were able to consistently get the ball out of the centre and provided strong delivery to their forwards. In addition, they were quicker to the loose ball and prevented the Lions from sending the ball into their forward line.

Playing back-to-back, Subiaco took on Swan Districts and were ambushed in the first quarter, conceding four goals and trailing by 20 points after seven minutes. In a willing contest at times, Swan Districts played better football and were able to convert their play into scores more effectively than the Lions.

At three-quarter time, the Swans led 8.3.51 to Subiaco’s 2.4.16 when play was called off early due to the fact that play had gone over time and the waiting basketballers were keen to use the court.

Subiaco’s loss means that they drop to second on the WAWFL ladder and all three clubs have a 5-5 record going into the final round, which will be played this Sunday (November 21) at HBF Stadium. The Finals Day will be played at the same venue on Sunday, November 28.
