WAFLW: Subiaco unable to overcome Swans
Subiaco showed the pieces of their best brand of football, but ultimately were outplayed by Swan Districts, going down by 49 points at Steel Blue Oval on Sunday March 13.
With the backline under pressure throughout the day, Helen Taylor did her best to stop the Swans, with 18 disposals.
Meanwhile, forward Hayley Corlett was lively up forward, kicking two goals.
With Subiaco (sixth) and Swan Districts (fifth) both outside the top five at the beginning of the round, both teams felt like they needed to win.
This was evident from the first bounce, as neither team was able to break away to get their team ahead in the early parts of the quarter.
Subiaco was able to get it inside 50 early, but the Swans’ defensive set up was up to the challenge and rebounded well.
The Lions equally were able to hold off Swan Districts’ attack, conceding just two scoring shots from nine entries.
However, it still meant the Swans took a seven-point lead into quarter time.
It didn’t take long for Subiaco to respond to the challenge in the second term.
Some great follow-up work from ruck Tess Lyons allowed the ball to get inside 50, where it spilled out the back and got to Nyra Anderson, who kicked a goal against her former team.
Subiaco continued to get chances up forward, but were not able to convert, with the Swans catching fire late in the term.
Three quick goals were kicked by Swan Districts in as many minutes, meaning Subiaco were 21 points down at half time.
Subiaco came out of the main break with a point to prove, and showed they were in the contest with multiple entries inside 50.
Hayley Corlett showed her speed, as she burst away from a contest with ball in hand, and launched for goal from outside the arc, with the ball dribbling through for a much needed goal.
However, the reward for effort did not reflect the scoreboard for long, with the Swans able to quickly convert after.
It was the start of another string of majors from the Swans, who kicked three more in the term to lead by 37 points with one quarter to go.
Despite the deficit, the Lions came out swinging, winning the first clearance before Corlett was able to kick her second goal to keep the hope of a win alive.
The Swans hit back with a goal, but Subiaco looked up for the fight.
The ball was played mostly in the Lions forward half early, but some missed chances in front of goal meant the scoreboard pressure wasn’t felt by the opposition.
In the end it was a bridge too far, with Swan Districts putting on a couple of goals late to walk away 49-point winners.
Unfortunately, it was a similar story for the other grades throughout the day, as the Rogers Cup side was beaten by 15 points, while the reserves team was defeated by 99 points.
Subiaco’s league side have a bye next round and will look to turn their fortunes around when they take on West Perth in round six.
Meanwhile, both the WAFLW reserves and the Rogers Cup sides will be in action in round five, when they take on Peel Thunder and East Perth respectively, at Leederville Oval on Sunday, March 20.
