Striking gold in the Goldfields
Many Subiaco greats have hailed from the Goldfields-Esperance including the likes of Kyal Horsely, Clancey Wheeler and current players Hayden Kennedy and the Borchet’s with the list going on. The pool of talented players seems to be continuing with a number of regional players representing Subiaco in the Colts and Futures programs.
Futures having wrapped up saw 10 Goldfields-Esperance players get the opportunity to pull on the maroon and gold, all of which had a strong impact playing alongside their metro team mates. Leading the charge was ball magnet Malakai Champion from Mines Rovers Football Club (Kalgoorlie) and spearhead forward Koopa Walsh from Newtown Condingup Football Club (Esperance)who after a strong Futures campaign have both earned a spot in the WA 16s State Academy.
The Subiaco Colts squad is looking strong after some good results early in season 2022. A good portion of the squad is made up of regional players, having relocated to Perth or training locally with the Lions Pride Academy to focus on the ‘Subi Style’ of football. Our 2 representatives of the WA State 18s Academy have come from Goldfields-Esperance: Tyrell Dewar – the silky Mines Rovers product from Kalgoorlie, finding himself in a new position down back having a great start to the year and Newtown Condy star Koltyn Tholstrup making the squad as a 17 year old, booting 9 goals in the first 3 rounds of the Colts season.
Another Mines Rovers young gun, now veteran Subi Colt, Jack Gouge has been selected by his peers and coaching staff to be in the 2022 Leadership Group as Vice Captain for the Subi side. Now in his 3rd year as a colt after first pulling on the jumper in 2020 helping the side to a premiership, hoping to get another title under his belt. “Coming from Kalgoorlie playing footy for Subi was always the goal,” says Gouge, “I was lucky to play in such a strong age group (in Kalgoorlie) meaning I came through the Subi Talent Pathway with my mates and now I get to represent Subiaco Colts alongside them.”
Subiaco currently have 28 Goldfields-Esperance players in the Talent programs “The number of boys in our program is a good reflection of the quality of football being played out in Kalgoorlie and Esperance,” say Subiaco Talent Manager Stuart Berryman. “It’s a pretty serious competition with 2 professionally run leagues and dedicated teams, I think the number of players we will see representing Subiaco league in both men’s and women’s will continue to grow in the coming years.”
The Kalgoorlie football will be front and centre when Subiaco take on Swans in Kalgoorlie on the 21st of May. Railways vs Mines Rovers Colts play the curtain-raiser with the GFL All Stars taking on the Indigenous All Stars following the Subiaco leage match.
