WAFL: Round Five Match Preview vs Swan Districts

Friday, May 20, 2022 - 4:25 AM by Matt Paddick

Subiaco will be looking for a strong performance when they head to Kalgoorlie to take on Swan Districts on Saturday May 21.

It’s the first time in eight years the Lions will head to the footy-rich town, where they will look to continue their momentum from round four.

It’s been a happy hunting ground for Subiaco, winning five of their six appearances there to date.

FORM

Subiaco had a tough few opening matches, and were thrown curveballs throughout to start the season 0-3.

Despite the underwhelming start, the Lions debuted 12 players and looked competitive against some of the best teams in the WAFL.

A win against Leederville co-tenants East Perth, who had been in good form, was reward for the Lions’ effort, and they will look to continue against the Swans.

Swan Districts had their own struggles in the early parts of the season, but have since turned their form around with back-to-back wins over Perth and Claremont.

It sets up an exciting clash for fans in Kalgoorlie to look forward to.

LAST TIME THEY MET

The Black Ducks broke a 12-game losing streak against the Lions when they went head-to-head in round 12 last season.

Just one point separated the two sides on the day, with Swan Districts holding their nerve against a surging Subiaco.

Captain Leigh Kitchin was busy with 25 disposals, while Angus Dewar looked to turn defence into attack from the backline with 15 touches.

ONE TO WATCH

Back in his hometown in front of his family and friends, Ryan Borchet will be looking to continue his good form this season.

The key forward is averaging a goal a game, and was one of the Lions’ best in their round three clash against West Perth.

After only being able to play a handful of games over the past few seasons, the 25-year-old has been a bright light for Subiaco in 2022, and will look to continue his strong start.
