WAFLW: Round 16 Match Preview vs Claremont

Friday, June 3, 2022 - 10:55 AM by Matt Paddick

The Lions will be involved in what is essentially an elimination final for the side, when they take on Claremont at Leederville Oval on Sunday June 5.

With Peel Thunder (third) and Swan Districts (fourth) playing each other this weekend, Subiaco must win to keep destiny in their own hands as the WAFLW nears the end of the regular season.

However, it will be no easy task, as the Tigers sit second on the ladder and are eyeing off a fourth-straight win against the Lions.

FORM

After winning three in a row and surging towards the top four, Subiaco had their momentum halted at the hands of the undefeated Sharks, going down by 50 points last round.

In an already tough match up, the Lions were without some key players in captain Tarni Golisano, Amy Mulholland, Jess Ritchie, and Tiah Toth for the clash.

Despite the loss, there were plenty of positives to take out of the game, which they will look to take in the clash against Claremont this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Tigers are going along nicely with wins against the Swans, South Fremantle, and Peel in their last three games.

They will take some stopping, but it’s not beyond the Lions when they are at full strength.

LAST TIME THEY MET

Subiaco tested Claremont when the two sides last fought in round 10, despite going down by 13 points.

The Lions were the better side for the first three quarters, keeping the Tigers to just one goal.

However, inaccuracy cost Subiaco when the game was on the line, and Claremont took full advantage in the last term.

They piled on four goals in the last quarter to close out the victory.

Abbey Dowrick was one of the Lions’ best on the day with 22 disposals and eight inside 50s.

ONE TO WATCH

With a clash as important as this one for Subiaco, their best players will need to be on top if they are going to walk away with the four points.

Jayme Harken has been one of the Lions’ most consistent performers across the season, and leads the competition for most disposals.

Her tackling pressure in the middle of the ground has also been felt, averaging over four per game.

Against the high-scoring Tigers, her defensive efforts will play a huge role for Subiaco on Sunday.
