NAIDOC round “special” for Matera

NAIDOC week is special in more ways than one according to Subiaco forward Brandon Matera.

He’s a proud Whadjuk/Noongar man, and is part of the Lions long history of Indigenous players alongside his brother Bailey.

Matera told Subiacofc.com.au it’s an important round in the WAFL calendar.

“Rounds like these bring awareness and help people learn about the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,” he said.

“It means a lot for me and my brother who get to run out there for Subiaco this week and play for our families and the community.”

Matera didn’t need to look far when it came to looking for idols in football.

His father Wally, and uncles Peter and Phillip played a combined 488 AFL games, providing inspiration for his own career.

The former Sun and Docker played 144 AFL games, and has played 19 games for the Lions since joining the club in 2021.

“Playing footy was something I always wanted to do from a young age in Auskick,” Matera said.

“To still be doing it now, and to play with my brother alongside me is an unreal thrill.

The 30-year-old said the club has provided an environment where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture can be embraced.

Subiaco also provided avenues to educate the playing group, with former Lion Des Headland speaking to the team last week about his football story.

Matera said it was a great learning opportunity.

“It’s great to hear about different people and their story behind where they come from and their footy journey,” he said.

“It’s unreal to be a part of Subiaco, it’s a great club and they do a lot for Indigenous people.”

Subiaco will be wearing an Indigenous guernsey designed by Kevin Bynder, depicting Lake Gwelup and Lake Karrinyup.

The seven circles represent the grassroots districts of Subiaco, showing the connection between the junior competition and the elite level.

Matera said he can’t wait to put on the jumper this weekend in what looms as an important clash for the Lions against East Fremantle.

The forward returned from an injury in round 10, and said the body is feeling good heading into the game.
