WAFL: Lions fall to fast starting Sharks
A four goal first quarter flurry from the Sharks has seen Subiaco fall by 25 points at Leederville Oval on Saturday July 9.
With a four goal flurry start the game for East Fremantle, the Lions fought valiantly but were on the back foot for the entirety of the game.
The fast start saw the Sharks come away victorious with the 9.11 (65) to 6.4 (40) win.
For the Lions, Kyle Stainsby and Galen Savigni stood up for the backline. Stainsby’s relentless pressure assisting the inaccuracy of the Sharks, whilst Savigni continued to rebound throughout the game with an impressive 19 touches.
Meanwhile, Lachlan Henderson continued his impressive maiden League season, keeping Jonathon Marsh to just 2 goals.
The Lions welcomed Chayse Grabe-Paparone who played his first league match making it Subiaco’s 17th debutant for the year, and the 7th Lions to debut from the 2020 Colts Premiership side.
Despite the hot start from the Sharks, Subiaco answered back through Stephan Giro and Ben Sokol.
A late goal from the Sharks, had the Lions trailing by 20 at the quarter time.
Early in the second term, the wet weather had left its mark on the game with both teams struggling to score.
It wasn’t until the 14 minute mark, where Leigh Kitchin was once again incredible, kicking a remarkable goal from outside the 50m mark.
A quick answer from the Sharks, aided by some inaccuracy had them leading by 24 at the major break.
The Sharks were once again assisted by Jonathon Marsh who snagged a goal early despite the consistent rain.
Both teams traded blows through the third term, with Wil Hickmott kicking truly to give the Lions hope going into the final break..
With everything needing to go the Lions’ way in the last, Sokol kicked an early major to provide hope for Subiaco fans.
However, a winning result proved too far out of reach, as East Fremantle prevailed by 25 points.
It was a brighter outcome for the Reserves and Colts, who both took home the four points earlier in the day.
The Lions will make the drive to Mandurah to take on Peel Thunder on Saturday July 16.
