WAFL: Lions on losing end of scrappy affair in Mandurah
Subiaco have gone down in a tough contest to Peel Thunder, falling by 26 points at Lane Group Stadium on Saturday July 16.
It was a heavily contested game, where the two sides were neck and neck throughout, with just two points separating them after three quarters.
However, the Thunder proved the better team on the day, kicking four goals to one in the last to take the 10.15 (75) to 7.7 (49) win.
Stefan Giro was strong in the midfield with 34 disposals and six inside 50s to try and get the Lions going.
Drew Rohde continued his fine season with 26 touches, while Lachie Henderson impressed by keeping Docker Josh Treacy to just one goal.
The Lions unveiled their 18th debutant for the season, with 2020 colts premiership captain Connor Patterson playing his first league game for the club.
Subiaco fought back after an early goal was kicked against them, with Aaron Breman getting on the board early.
While the Thunder looked to dominate around the ground, the Lions’ defence was up to the challenge, with Aaron Heal leading the way.
It meant Subiaco were able to kick one against the grain through Ben Sokol, while a free kick down the ground helped Ryan Borchet get his first.
A late reply from Peel meant it was an eight-point lead for the Lions at quarter time.
The Thunder once again started the quarter well, with Lloyd Meek kicking a goal early.
It could have been worse for the Lions, but the defence continued to persist with their pressure.
Subiaco clicked into gear soon after, with Borchet and Sokol kicking back-to-back goals to get on top.
The speed of their passing chains was a highlight, as the Lions looked untouchable when they used the ball quickly.
Peel Thunder refused to give in however, kicking two late goals in the term to even up the scores at half time.
It was one goal each in the third term, with neither team able to break away, setting up a thrilling finish.
Unfortunately for the Lions, Peel looked the better side in the final term, with multiple entries inside 50.
Their inaccuracy threatened to turn the game in Subiaco’s favour, and when Michael Braut kicked his first, hope returned to the side.
However, the Thunder put on the afterburners and kicked the next three majors, running away 26-point winners.
The reserves started off the day with a thrilling come from behind victory, but under lights the colts were unable to secure the win.
The Lions will be desperate for a win when they take on Claremont at Leederville Oval on Saturday July 23.
