"A Lion for Life": Delahunty announces Retirement
Subiaco champion Lachlan Delahunty has called time on his outstanding career, with the 5-time premiership player set to bid farewell in Lion’s final home game against Perth at Leederville Oval on Saturday, August 27.
One of the most decorated Lions in club history, Delahunty will hang up the boots after extracting everything from his body across 8 seasons in the WAFL.
The 31-year-old will depart the game having played 140 games for Subiaco in which he played in 7 Grand Finals, winning five of them, a Sandover Medal, and numerous State team representations.
“It’s been a privilege to play so many years at this great football club and I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity to represent Subiaco,” Delahunty said.
“Footy and the Subiaco Lions have given me so much and I’ve loved the journey. I’ve made lifelong friendships and learnt so much from champions like Kyal Horsley, Darren Rumble, and of course my best mate Kitch. In addition to mentors such as Schoey, Beau and all assistants. Subiaco has become my family this past decade and a place to call home. Thank you.
“To be able to farewell Subiaco players, supporters, friends and family one last time at Leederville Oval and say thank you for the incredible support over the years will be the perfect way to finish my career.”
Moving to Subiaco in 2014, Delahunty had an incredible induction to the WAFL, playing 15 games his first year rotating between Half Forward and Ruckman. Delahunty went on to play a pivotal role in the 2014 Subiaco Premiership, as the start of what was to come.
“Lachlan Delahunty’s legacy will remain at the Subiaco forever,” Subiaco CEO Peter Capes said.
“We have been fortunate to have many great players come through the doors of our club over our 126 years and Dela ranks with the best of them.
“But his on-field achievements are only part of the story. He has been a guiding light for our younger players, but also a significant contributor across the broader community.
“He is a Lion for life and we have been blessed to have him here for the last 8 seasons.”
A staple within the Western Australian representative team, Delahunty saw success representing the Black Swans. Especially in 2017, when Delahunty was a part of a historic team that took down the VFL side in Victoria for the first time since 1904.
But the crowning moment of his career came in 2019 when Delahunty was crowned the Sandover Medallist putting together a season that would’ve made Polly Farmer proud.
Critical to the success of the Subiaco Premierships in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021, not only will Delahunty retire as one of the most decorated Lions in history, he goes down as one of the most tenacious and competitive players in the Club has ever had.
