Champion named All-Australian Under 16's
Subiaco rising star Malakai Champion has been named an Under 16 AFL All-Australian for his recent efforts at the national carnival.
Selected off his incredible season with the Subiaco Futures squad, who were once again undefeated, Champion was one of six Lions representatives for Western Australia, and was a stand-out talent throughout the carnival.
Named in the squad as a forward pocket, he was able to use his speed and quick decision-making to have his presence felt at the highest level.
The Mines Rovers product has never let his timid personality hold him back from success.
Speaking to Subiacofc.com.au, Champion credited his achievements to his support network, particularly his mother who has always pushed him to take the next step.
“When I got invited to play with Futures, I had to move down to Perth (from Kalgoorlie) which scared me.
“My mum has always challenged me to reach the next level and without her support, I never would’ve made the move down.”
Similar to the Futures program, Champion said he was unsure of the opportunity the State Team provided.
“Throughout try-outs, I was worried about making the team and unsure if I could play at the next level,” he said.
“But once again, my mum, uncles and pop assured me it was the right move.”
The Western Australian under 16s was one of the strongest sides within the competition, only losing their first match to South Australia.
Champion said their sole defeat was a galvanising moment for the group.
“After the first game, the team became a lot closer,” he said.
“Once we gelled, the ball movement was a lot better and we were able to break down the opposition easily.”
The fast-paced football played by the side complimented Champion’s style of play, who averaged 13 disposals and looked dangerous around goal.
With the recent announcement, there is already draft buzz surrounding the Kalgoorlie youngster which he admits is his overall goal.
However, in the short term, Champion is looking forward to Colts football with Subiaco.
“The ultimate goal is to play AFL, but for now I’m looking forward to hopefully winning a flag this year with the Colts and for the next two years whilst I’m still eligible or maybe even Seniors”
With the Colts currently sitting fourth on the ladder with a big game against 3rd place, East Perth this Saturday there is no doubting the drive Champion provides for the team will be valuable going forward.
