Two GFL Mitchell Medallists named after tie in the vote count
The Goldfields Football League’s best and fairest has resulted in a tie, with two players taking home the Mitchell Medal.
Mines Rovers veteran Jordan Delbridge and Railways forward Jack Steel could not be split, with each polling 29 votes on Saturday evening.
Delbridge, whose brother won the award twice in 2016 and 2018, has football blood within him, with his great-grandfather playing in the WAFL.
He told the Kalgoorlie Miner it was a relief to win one, after finishing second in 2018 and 2019.
Meanwhile, Steel was recruited ahead of season 2022, following a stint with Perth last year in the WAFL.
He also took home the Dick Robinson Medal as the leading goal scorer, with 52 to his name.
Also awarded on the night, Boulder’s Jake Nuich took home the most valuable player trophy, and Judd Kelman was named rookie of the year.
Mines Rovers’ Jess Moore polled 39 votes to take out the women’s fairest and best, while Kalgoorlie’s Zala Verbole earned the leading goal scorer award in the league.
Also from Mines Rovers, Jake Littlewood took out the best reserves player, and Boulder’s Paul Bratton received the Colts best and fairest.
The league’s umpire of the year went to Dave Roberts, while Jason Wells was named volunteer of the year.
