Subiaco fall short against Minor Premiers

Wednesday, September 7, 2022 - 11:41 AM

Subiaco finish the 2022 season with a 47-point loss to West Perth despite three-quarters of tightly contested football.

Perth’s stormy weather meant it was a difficult game of football, with both sides making errors throughout the game.

The Falcons managed to run away with the game despite only a three-point deficit at the major break.

Freshly appointed backman Chad Harris looked strong in defence, with 12 kicks and 11 handballs, while Ben Sokol kicked three goals to secure his second Bernie Naylor medal.

Gusty winds made conditions difficult, with regular changes in direction keeping the forwards on their toes.

There were plenty of stoppages, and both teams were finding it difficult to have clean possession.

Ben Sokol was the first to hit the scoreboard kicking the opener nine minutes into the first quarter.

Consistent forward pressure from the Lions, saw them up by six points midway through the first term before two consecutive goals put the Falcons ahead into the break.

Subiaco looked the better side throughout the second quarter but struggled to find the scoreboard.

With Ben Sokol the main forward target all game, delivery seemed to stifle at critical moments. Regardless Sokol managed to score two goals to have the Lions trailing by seven points 13 minutes into the second.

With the Falcons looking strong going into the major break, Angus Dewar assisted once again with a steadying goal shifting momentum back towards the Lions.

With Subiaco trailing by three points at halftime, Lions fans felt optimistic about dethroning the minor premiers.

However, the Lions were held goalless in the third quarter putting the Lions on the back foot.

Subiaco’s pressure was a highlight of the game but due to the windy conditions, the inaccuracy was costly.

However, Subiaco never gave in, taking the game on to surge forward late in the contest.

Regardless, West Perth prevailed 47-point victors, assuring them the minor premiership and finishing Subiaco’s season.
