Consistent Sokol claims second Bernie Naylor Medal
Subiaco may have had a down year, but it was one to remember for Ben Sokol, who claimed the 2022 Bernie Naylor Medal with 41 goals to his name.
It’s the second time he’s been the leading goal scorer across a season, after he first won it in 2019.
Sokol told Subiacofc.com.au it was a reflection of more than just his game.
“I felt like I had a relatively consistent season, even when we weren’t going great as a group,” he said.
“I’ll probably look back on it more so when I finish, but I’m super proud.
“I wouldn’t have been able to do it without all the help from my teammates.”
Sokol has been a pillar of consistency throughout his time at the Lions.
His haul in 2022 is the fifth time he’s scored more than 40 goals in a season, where he’s been one of the main targets up forward for the Lions.
The 26-year-old said a lot of effort was put in off the field in order to succeed on it.
“I try to train hard and do the extras at training,” he said.
“I’ve really worked hard on my goal kicking the past four or five years and my contested marking, so really trying to work on the strengths of my game.”
Sokol has been in the WAFL system for a number of years, and has been part of the Lions’ program since 2016.
A 128-game veteran, he said he’s enjoying his time playing with the current forwards.
“Equal with ‘18 and ‘19, it’s probably been the most enjoyable year in the forward line,” Sokol said.
“I’ve tried to be a bit of a mentor for those boys the past couple of years.”
A member of Subiaco’s leadership group, he said his style was to lead by example.
“I’m probably not the loudest guy out there, but I try to lead by action, at training, and do all I can for the group,” he said.
“I love seeing when guys like Kody Eaton, Ryan Borchet, Jordy Faraone, and Aaron Breman put together good games.
Sokol added it was nice to have another experienced head in Brandon Matera to help guide him along the way.
He hoped more success for the group come 2023 would mean more chances to shine for the younger players coming through.
