Reserves: Elimination Final Match Preview vs Swan Districts

Friday, September 9, 2022 - 9:45 AM by Matt Paddick

For Subiaco’s reserves side, it’s a simple mindset.

Their fourth-placed finish means the side needs to keep winning to stay alive in season 2022, with the first hurdle a clash with Swan Districts at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Sunday September 11.

It will be a tough match, with two strong sides whose senior teams are both out of finals, meaning both will be hungry for success.

FORM

Subiaco have looked impressive during the reserves’ season, winning 10 games throughout the year.

Over the past three weeks, the Lions had good wins against South Fremantle and Perth, before falling to the Falcons in the final round.

It meant Subiaco narrowly missed out on the double chance, setting up their clash with the Swans.

Meanwhile, Swan Districts have been building since round 17 when they were out of the top five.

They won three of their last four games to qualify, so the Lions will need to be switched on from the first bounce.

LAST TIME THEY MET

It was a tough match when the two sides fought in round 10, but Subiaco were victorious on the day.

The two teams traded goals throughout, before the Lions gathered momentum to lead by as much as 20.

Swan Districts hit back, kicking the first goal in the last, but a big goal from Oskar Matthews in the last put the result beyond doubt for Subiaco.

Patrick Mullane was the best of the Lions, with five marks from 12 touches.

ONE TO WATCH

In a big game, quality seems to stand up above the rest.
It’s the reason Lachlan Vanirsen will be so important for the Lions in the finals series.

With some League exposure throughout the season, the midfielder uses the ball well and can hit the scoreboard, making him a difficult match up.

The 19-year-old is averaging 17 disposals and a whopping 11 tackles in the past month.
