Reserves: Grand Final Match Preview vs West Perth
Subiaco have embraced the do or die nature of the WAFL Finals and will take on West Perth in the Reserves Grand Final at Leederville Oval on Saturday October 1.
It’s been a remarkable season, and the Lions are one game away from etching their names in history.
FORM
Subiaco have looked red-hot ever since the finals series commenced.
After finishing fourth during the regular season, the side has been forced to win to stay alive, and have done so in convincing fashion.
They were unstoppable in their 73-point win over Swan Districts in the Elimination Final, and stormed away from South Fremantle in the Semi Final by 43 points.
The Lions were challenged in last week’s Preliminary Final against Claremont, but Jamie Battigelli got his men firing, as they kicked away to a 39-point victory to advance to the decider.
They go up against the Falcons, who have been the benchmark across all grades this year.
Their Reserves side finished first, and picked apart Claremont to book their spot in the Grand Final.
It’s set to be an exciting event as both teams eye off Premiership glory.
LAST TIME THEY MET
On the last stop before the WAFL Finals, the two sides went head to head at Pentanet Stadium, with the Falcons taking an 18-point win.
West Perth got out to an early lead, and Subiaco were forced to play catch up for the remainder of the game.
In the end the Lions had more scoring shots, but the Falcons were more accurate in front of goal.
The conditions will be different this weekend at Leederville Oval, with the game to be decided by who can handle the occasion best.
ONE TO WATCH
Old football folklore suggests backmen win Premierships, and the numbers say a strong defensive effort from the Lions may hold the key to the game.
West Perth are the number one team for scoring across the season, and will take some stopping.
However, Subiaco’s back six has been in form this finals series, conceding on average just 39 points per game.
Their mix of defence and attack has put pressure on their opposition, and could be the difference between the two sides on Saturday.
