WAFLW: Round One Match Preview vs South Fremantle
The Lions are set for an early litmus test, if pre-season is anything to go by.
Round one has Subiaco taking on South Fremantle at Leederville Oval on Sunday March 12.
While the Lions have a strong record against the Bulldogs, a new year means the slate is wiped clean.
FORM
While it can be difficult to get a gauge after just one match, Subiaco were competitive against Peel Thunder in their eight-point loss at Lane Group Stadium a couple of weeks ago.
The Lions were on top at half time, but let the lead slip from their grasp.
However, there were plenty of positives to take out, with a chance to put training into practice this weekend.
Their opponents South Fremantle meanwhile look to have made improvements in the off-season to strengthen their side.
A 45-point win over last year’s finalist East Fremantle and a 123-point win over West Perth in pre-season clashes will have the side full of confidence, setting up an intriguing contest at Leederville Oval.
LAST TIME THEY MET
In round 11 last season, the Lions flexed their muscles against South Fremantle to continue their push in 2022.
With the help of some AFLW-level talent, Subiaco took a 47-point win at Leederville Oval.
Standing out for the Lions was captain Tarni Golisano, who had 29 possessions and six inside-50s, while Port Adelaide’s Maggie MacLachlan was thrown forward with huge impact, kicking four goals.
ONE TO WATCH
After a superb 2022 campaign, ruck Tess Lyons will be looking to back it up with another strong season.
She made an impact on the WAFLW competition, averaging 19 hit outs per game to give the midfielders first use.
The 25-year-old has been recognised as a leader of this team, after being voted into the leadership group.
She’ll be looking to lead by example when season 2023 gets underway.
