WAFLW Round 1 - Subiaco v South Freo Match Recap
In a highly competitive opening round match of the 2023 WAFLW season, Subiaco and South Fremantle played out an exciting draw with a final score of 5.4 (34) to 4.10 (34). Both teams put on an impressive display of skill and determination, but neither side could gain a decisive advantage to secure the win.
One standout player of the match was Joanne Cregg, who made her debut for Subiaco and was named best on ground. Cregg played a pivotal role in Subiaco's midfield, providing excellent service to her teammates and displaying great skill and poise under pressure.
In addition to Cregg, Subiaco debuted five Lions, with 15-year-old, Olivia Crane also going on to have a cracking game from the defensive 50. With South Fremantle entering their forward 50, 47 times compared to Subiaco's 15, Crane was an instrumental part of Subiaco's result.
The game started with both teams showing great intensity, with Subiaco and South Fremantle exchanging goals in a closely contested opening quarter. Subiaco held a narrow lead at the end of the first quarter, with a score of 2.1 (13) to 1.3 (9).
The second quarter saw both teams continue to battle it out, with South Fremantle managing to even the score at half-time with a score of 3.7 (25) to 4.2 (26).
As the second half began, both teams continued to play with great intensity and skill, but neither side could take control of the match. Subiaco managed to take a slim lead into the final quarter, with a scoreline of 5.4 (34) to 3.9 (27).
In the final quarter, South Fremantle came out firing and managed to close the gap, but Subiaco's defence held strong, preventing South Fremantle from taking the lead. Despite South Fremantle adding another point to their scoreline, it was not enough to secure the win, and the match ended in a draw.
Head coach of Subiaco FC, Michael Farmer, praised both teams' performances and highlighted Cregg's outstanding debut. "I thought it was a fantastic game of football, and both teams showed great skill and determination throughout the match," Farmer said.
"Joanne Cregg was exceptional in her debut for us, and her performance was a big reason why we were able to compete so strongly in the midfield. She was the best on ground today, and we're thrilled to have her on our team”.
