WAFLW: Round Two Match Preview vs Swan Districts

Friday, March 17, 2023 - 12:42 PM by Matt Paddick

The Lions will be looking to take their first win of the 2023 WAFLW season when they head to Bassendean to take on Swan Districts.

The clash on Sunday March 19 is one where the Lions will be hoping to continue building to make their mark on the competition.

FORM

Subiaco looked impressive in their first hit out of 2023, but were forced to split the points with South Fremantle after the two sides couldn’t be separated.

It was a couple of debutants who led the way, with Olivia Crane and Joanne Cregg both showing they’re capable at the level.

After obtaining an early lead, the Lions weren’t able to kick away, opening the door for the Bulldogs to come back.

A draw was a fitting conclusion to the clash, with neither side deserving a loss on the day.

Meanwhile, the Swans lost their opening game to Peel Thunder by five points.

Swan Districts were too inaccurate in front of goal on the day, an issue they will be looking to rectify against Subiaco.

LAST TIME THEY MET

The Lions took the points when the two sides last met in round 13 of last season.

At Leederville Oval, Subiaco took a 17-point win thanks to a midfield masterclass from Tarni Golisano.

She amassed 25 disposals and was the link between attack and defence.

Meanwhile, Fremantle-listed forward Amy Mulholland was strong in front of goals, kicking three majors.

ONE TO WATCH

Subiaco’s WAFLW side has been strong for a number of years, but a consistent goal kicking forward is something they have lacked in recent times.

Hammersly-Carine product Kelsey Patterson could be the answer.

The 28-year-old continues to get chances in front of goal, having eight scoring shots in her two-game career.

She was named in the WAFLW team of the week for round one, and will be looking to continue her good form.
