Tuesday, April 18, 2023 - 11:22 AM by Matt Paddick

Subiaco were dealt their first loss of the season, falling to East Perth by 23 points at Leederville Oval on Saturday, April 15. It was a game that got away from the Lions, with the Royals catching fire with six goals in the first term.

Subiaco came back late, but gave themselves too much to do, with the scores finishing 17.10 (112) to 14.5 (89).

Midfielder Stefan Giro continued to find the football, with 30 disposals and two goals. Meanwhile, Ben Sokol showed his strong form, kicking three majors, while Aaron Heal tried hard all day down back. The Lions looked strong early, with their ability to maintain possession working in their favour.

The side went from one end to the other, with Taj Schofield hitting Jakeb Wagenknecht up forward, who kicked the first goal of the match. Unfortunately, it was one of the few highlights in the first term, with the Royals putting the foot down.

They kicked six-straight goals, putting Subiaco on the back foot.

It was a more competitive effort in the second quarter, with Schofield again in the action, this time a goal of his own. But for every offensive move the Lions had, East Perth seemed to have an answer. The two sides traded goals, including debutant Robert Hansen kicking his first league major.

A couple of late Royals scorers had Subiaco down by 52 points at half time.

With nothing to lose, the Lions took the game to East Perth, and had success in doing so. Ben Sokol and Ben Golding caught fire, each kicking two goals in the term get the side five in a row.  A late Josh Robbins major had the side within four goals with one quarter to play. It looked to be all but over when East Perth kicked the first goal of the last.

However, the Lions kept chipping away, with multiple goals from Giro breathing life back into the side. Time was the enemy in the end, with the Royals finishing on top.

The Lions will now look towards a tough matchup, when they take on top of the ladder Claremont at Leederville Oval on Saturday, April 22.

WAFLW: Subiaco inspired in skipper’s milestone clash

Subiaco have bounced back to winning form in style, with a 57-point win over East Perth at Leederville Oval on Saturday, April 15. Playing the rare early fixture, the Lions sprung to life early, and never gave up the lead.

Subiaco managed to keep the young Royals goalless for the match, winning 8.11 (59) to 0.2 (2).

The side was inspired by skipper Tarni Golisano, who was dominant in the midfield. In game number 150, she gathered a game-high 29 disposals, and kicked a goal in a best-afield performance.

Meanwhile, Beth Schilling played a different role from her usual full back, having an impact as a forward with two goals. It was a slow opening quarter, but Amy Mulholland got proceedings off with a goal in the seventh minute. It was the first of four unanswered goals, leading to a lead of 29 points at half time.

The Lions continued the damage in the second half, refusing to let the Royals get into the contest. But the champagne moment came when Golisano in the final minute of the game kicked truly, sending the side home with a 57-point win.

It marks the Lions’ first win against the Leederville Oval co-tenants, in their first match in WAFLW. However, the result couldn’t be replicated in the Rogers Cup, who lost by 23 points.

The Lions will travel to Mandurah for their next clash, when they take on Peel Thunder on Saturday April 22.
