Lions take Andrew Christie Cup after strong win

A nine-goal performance from Subiaco’s key forwards helped them to a 24-point win over Claremont at Leederville Oval. The Lions worked their way into the game, before kicking six goals in a row in the first half to give themselves a buffer.

Subiaco were clinical in their process, and stayed on track in a good four quarter effort.

Their strong win was rewarded with the Andrew Christie Cup, honouring the former Lions’ captain who fought for his country in World War I. Ryan Borchet and Ben Sokol starred, kicking five and four goals respectively to give their side the win.

Meanwhile, Galen Savigni continued to impress in defence with 19 disposals, and Koltyn Tholstrup played a defensive role up forward, quelling the influence of Jye Bolton.

The Tigers were on top early, kicking the first two goals of the match. However, the Lions soon kicked into gear, with Ben Golding kicking truly to give his side their first. It was the start of a four-goal run for the Lions, with Ryan Borchet kicking back-to-back goals to give Subiaco a 13-point lead at quarter time.

Subiaco continued to dominate in the second term, with Liam Hickmott having an influence on proceedings. The side’s tackling pressure was immense, and it led to goals up forward. Drew Rohde was able to put through his first, making it six goals in a row for the Lions.

Claremont were able to hit back through Martinis, before Ben Sokol got in on the action to kick his second. Taj Schofield late in the term kicked a goal, giving Subiaco a lead of 29 points at half time. It was an even third quarter, as both teams tried to show their strength.

Bailey Rogers kicked truly for the Tigers, before Borchet was in the action again, kicking his third. The sides continued to trade goals, with Subiaco having an answer for every Claremont major.

However, Anthony Treacy kicked a late goal to give his side the momentum. With both sides in it in the last term, the first goal looked to be crucial for either side.

It belonged to Subiaco through Borchet, who kicked his fifth to help seal the 24-point win.

WAFLW: Subiaco secures comprehensive win on the road

Subiaco are back on track in season 2023, following a strong win in Mandurah against Peel Thunder. After an even first half, the Lions kicked away in the second, dominating around the ground.

Their efforts saw them run out 8.12 (60) to 2.1 (13) winners. Tarni Golisano continues to show why she's one of the best in the WAFLW competition, with 35 disposals and 10 tackles.

Meanwhile, Kelsey Patterson had an influence, scoring three majors. Subiaco welcomed three debutants to the side in Fina Dethlefsen, Bree Wills, and Meg McAullay.

The Lions burst out of the gate through Patterson, who kicked the first goal of the match. It was a high-pressure contest, with neither team able to get free flowing ball movement.

Jess Ritchie was able to kick truly, extending Subiaco’s lead. The second quarter saw the Thunder come back into the contest. Goals to Aisha Wright and Tanisha Anderson saw Peel reduce the margin to two points at half time.

However, Subiaco came charging after half time, with Patterson catching fire.

She kicked back-to-back goals to swing the momentum back her side’s way. Tiah Toth then converted for her first, stretching the margin to 21 points. After all the scoring had been completed at the southern end of the ground for the entirety of the first three quarters, it appeared the Lions would need to work hard to maintain their lead.

However, Subiaco defied the trend within the game, with Fina Dethlefsen kicking her first goal on debut.

The Lions continued to dominate the rest of the game, refusing to give the Thunder a chance to get back into the contest. The margin could have been greater, but Subiaco scored seven behinds in a row to finish the match, winning by 47 points.
