WAFLW RECAP: Round 9
WAFLW: Lions bounce back against East Perth.
Subiaco have returned a much needed win and percentage boost as they eye a spot in the finals. Against Leederville Oval co-tenants East Perth, the Lions got ahead early and never gave it up.
Subiaco looked too experienced with ball in hand, as the Royals continued to build in their first WAFLW season. Veteran on-baller Tiah Toth was a welcomed return, with a game-high 24 disposals and eight inside 50s.
Meanwhile, Olivia Wolmarans looks to be a player for the future, showing her forward prowess with two goals and five marks. The Lions welcomed back their State representatives, who each had an impact on the game. Wolmarans, who was named in the under 16 girls All-Australian team, took a strong mark early and kicked the first goal of the match.
Subiaco managed to keep the ball in their forward half for the entirety of the first quarter, but the lead was eight points at the first break. Meadhbh Moloney was on the receiving end of a goal in the second term, kicking truly to finish the scoring chain.
The pressure from the Lions appeared too much for the inexperienced Royals, with Toth finding plenty of the football as a result. Subiaco continued to pile on the pain in the third term, with Hanna Dethlefsen scoring.
Wolmarans threatened in the air once again, taking another strong mark resulting in her second goal. The result was all but set in the final term, as Dethlefsen kicked her second and Hayley Corlett her first to solidify the win.
Unfortunately the news wasn’t as good for the Rogers Cup squad, going down to Claremont by 56 points.
