WAFLW: Round 11 Match Preview vs Swan Districts
The Lions face an important challenge which could shape the rest of their 2023 campaign. They’re up against an in-form Swan Districts at Leederville Oval on Saturday May 20.
With every game crucial going forward, a win would go a long way to securing a top four spot.
FORM
Subiaco capped off some strong form with a 10-point win over East Fremantle in round 10. It marked their fourth win from five matches, after two wins against the Royals, and one against Peel Thunder.
It means the side is in third place on the WAFLW ladder, when they take on the fourth-placed Swan Districts. The Swans are a much improved side in recent times, having won their past five games.
A win would see either side sit clear in third spot, a result both teams will be after.
LAST TIME THEY MET
The Lions had their first win of the season back in round two against Swan Districts. They were victorious at Steel Blue Oval, winning by 47 points. Jess Ritchie showed her influence as a forward, kicking two goals, while Tarni Golisano racked up the disposals with 25.
However, the Swans appear a much improved side, which will be a good test for Subiaco to see where they are at.
ONE TO WATCH
A move into the midfield has paid dividends for young gun Eva Popovsky. Initially brought in as a small forward, the 18-year-old has looked impressive in the middle of the ground, and has shown the ability to play a defensive role while there.
The tackling beast is averaging just under six tackles per game. She was also included in the state under 18s squad, alongside Madison Dodd and Charlotte Newland.
Popovsky’s influence could help negate the impact of the Swans midfielders.
