Lions play key role in State Game
There was a strong influence from Subiaco in the State Game between the WAFL and SANFL last week at the Adelaide Oval. Despite a 13-point loss to the Croweaters, Stefan Giro and Ben Sokol performed admirably for WA, and were amongst the best players on the ground.
Sokol provided a strong target up forward and kicked three goals, while Giro played more up forward and had an influence with 20 disposals and a goal.
A former South Australian, he said it was nice to go back to his home state for the match.
“It was a really good experience,” Giro said.
“I got to see a lot of family there and got to bond with guys that we don’t get to spend a lot of time with.”
The Norwood product was comfortable at the ground, having played at the ground previously. However, he conceded it was a little strange going up against some players he grew up playing with.
“I knew a couple of them and played a lot of junior footy with a few of those boys through state programs,” Giro said.
“It was a bit weird, but it was good fun.”
Meanwhile, Subiaco also featured in the coaches box. League coach Beau Wardman was tasked with the role of an assistant, coaching the midfielders on the day.
He said it was an enjoyable experience.
“I think getting the competition’s best players together is always a good experience,” Wardman said.
“Our main theme throughout the game was to bring their weapons.
“They’ve all been picked for a reason, and making sure they bring their strengths.”
Wardman said it was a highly competitive game, but WA’s forward 50 entries cost them. However, he said the experience for everyone involved was important.
“For all those guys to mix together, to speak and to hear some of the stories of the SANFL players post game is really important,” Wardman said.
“I think it helps keep that State rivalry competitive.
“The ability to play against the competition’s best and give those guys an opportunity on a more national stage was really important.”
Wardman also praised the performances of the Subiaco duo who competed in the side.
“Stef played a bit more through half forward, I thought he was a really good link player,” he said.
“Ben Sokol highlighted the form he’s been in to start the season, he looked dangerous and presented really strongly.
“From a club point of view, I thought those couple of guys really acquitted themselves well.”
